Many local sanitation departments have an online application that you submit directly via their Web sites. There may be a fee for submitting the application, but usually only in cases where you are applying to take the civil service exam. This fee, usually around $30, can be waived if you are on public assistance. Once your basic application is approved, you will be able to take the civil service exam. Sometimes the online application is for a job itself, not just for the opportunity to take a civil service exam. Smaller cities and private carting companies often ask applicants to send their application materials to a specific contact person. You will have to send this person (via either e-mail or conventional mail) a cover letter and resume and possibly a completed application form.
