Chapter Ten

“Another day without disaster.” Gwen finished jotting notes on the chart of her last scheduled patient.

“Speak for yourself, sister. Doc’s a train wreck.”

Gwen glanced up to find Nancy collapsed behind the reception desk. Her usual pin-neat braid had loosened and strands of curly hair sprouted about her face. A huge red blotch marred the center of her pristine white uniform. At least it looked like ketchup, not blood.

“Does he need pain medication?”

“He needs to be sedated, or maybe I do.”

Gwen hadn’t been in to see her father since breakfast. They’d been busy and she’d been preoccupied. Every moment her mind wasn’t absorbed with sunstroke, poison oak, foot fungus or diaper rash, she’d been dreaming about Eli’s chest.

If she didn’t know better she’d think she was going through puberty again. She couldn’t remember feeling such strong urges since her hormones kicked in when she was fourteen. Back then everything had felt stronger, loomed larger, seemed worse than it really was. Kisses were life altering, touches were mind-bending and dreams always seemed just about to come true.

She’d been dreaming of Eli with no shirt, then she’d looked outside, seen him fooling around with that elephant, and she’d been so entranced by all that smooth, supple, burnished flesh she’d had to get a closer look.

Thank God no one had seen her drooling but her. What was happening? She was not a flighty, foolish child. She was a trauma physician. She saw bodies every damn day.

But she couldn’t remember seeing one like Eli’s. Not ever.

And she couldn’t remember wanting to see one again quite as badly as she wanted to see his.

“Hey, Gwen? You want to stay on this planet for a few more minutes?”

“Hmm? Oh, sorry, Nancy.” Gwen’s cheeks heated, and when Nancy’s sharp gaze zeroed in on her face, she returned her attention to the chart she’d already finished with. “What’s Doc doing?”

“Besides being a pain?”

“Isn’t he always?”

“Yes, but at least when he’s working, he growls as he walks by. Now he growls whenever I step foot in his room. He wants to know what’s going on out here.”

“What does he think? A wild orgy?”

“Interesting example. Ever been to one?”

“No!” Since she’d been dreaming of something close, Gwen put a little too much spirit into her negation. The expansion of Nancy’s grin made her blurt, “How about you?”

“There’s an orgy at the VFW every Monday at two. I try not to miss it.” Gwen just stared at her until Nancy rolled her eyes. “Geez, Gwen, you lived here. The raciest thing in Pine River is Eli watering the lawn in his UW shorts.”

“When did you see that?” Gwen narrowed her eyes. “And why were you looking?”

“I’m his friend. I’m not dead. Why? Are you jealous?”

“Jealous? Me? I’m engaged.”

“But not dead. I bet Dr. Heinrich doesn’t have thighs like Eli.”

“Nancy!” Gwen couldn’t stop herself from blushing, and Nancy grinned.

“You have seen Eli in his red-and-white specials.”

Gwen couldn’t help but return Nancy’s smile. “I’m not blind or stupid.”

Gwen had missed such simple girl talk.
