Chapter Nineteen
Aftermath
B ryce had never run so fast in his life.
Years and years of warnings, teaching from his dragon masters, and love and care and doting had him under the assumption that this day would never come. That Maven wouldnât befall the fate everyone snidely told him she would the moment Serena fell pregnant.
He told Toby to follow but stay at a distance with Evelyn and the Cerberus. He wasnât sure about the level of carnage that had taken place yet. How Dark his daughter had gone.
When he arrived at the slavers camp, his mouth fell open in shock.
The green earth had taken on a new hue of red, painted by entrails from a bloodbath. Heâd heard screams and the shrieking of a monster in the distance die down as he approached but he didnât think to assume... he wouldnât have thought...
Bryce bit his lip, scanning the area for his daughter. He walked slowly through the dismembered bodies of what he assumed were slavers, listening carefully. He heard a ragged wheezing close to his right. Turning his head, he saw a gasping head jutting out from under a crushed wooden tent support. The man wore fine bright blue armor, crafted with care.
The one in charge of this operation then.
Bryce bent down low. âWhere is she?â
Blood and saliva flowed from the manâs mouth. âStill around. M-monsterâ¦.D-demonâ¦.onâ¦earthâ¦â
With those words a gurgled death rattle followed, and the manâs eyes rolled to the back of his head.
Oh Maven, my baby what have you done? What have I done
Bryce stood to his feet and broke into a power walk, eyes scanning the encampment - the rubble, the bodies. He strained his ears for any other sound but the only sound he could hear was the gentle rustling of the leaves in the wind.
âMaven!â he called out, looking wildly around him. Where was she? He saw no sign of her, only the destruction she left behind. The entrails and horrified faces of strewn about corpses burning into Bryceâs mind.
Five minutes followed of him wandering and calling for his daughter, checking the rubble and turning over mangled bodies. He had to be doubly sure his girl wasnât one of the fallen. On one hand, if one of the lowlife slavers had taken her out, the damage could be contained. On the other hand, the thought of his daughter dead made him sick.
So far, nothing.
Is she even still in the area? His stomach turned at the idea that she had left.
Crunch .
The hairs of Bryceâs arms and neck stood on end at the sound. He spun around and couldnât hold back the cry that left his lips at the sight of his daughter standing some feet away from him.
Nothing cheeky or sassy â nothing familiar - remained in her eyes which were now a deep red, all red fading to a hue of black where the whites should be. It looked like his girl. His dear Mae. Yet also like his dragon benefactors, minus the impressive height. And the smoke! A scarlet haze emanated from her eyes.
