The Hunt

We sat on the wall for what felt like forever. Eventually, Ray rounded the corner. Bariat followed, scolding the man, but his words weren’t harsh. He merely pointed out the man’s naivety, telling him to not repeat his mistakes. Ray desperately apologized. Bariat didn’t get angry or frustrated. He just patted Ray’s shoulder, telling him that it was OK. Then his eyes keyed in on us. He jumped off his horse and slowly walked over to us.

“You bastards! I should have you executed for treason. You think that I’m going to let you scumbags just run around freely?”

Edren yawned, stubbing out his cigarette. “Eh, it’s fine. I just got here before you did. It’s not like we ran away. Also, I didn’t even know how to ride a horse properly, so in a roundabout way, this is your fault.” Edren’s reasoning only angered the fuming Bariat more.

“That’s not the point! I never ordered you to scout ahead. You can’t just do whatever you want!”

Edren cracked his back as he got up from the hard glass floor. “All right, all right. Whatever. My bad. Can we go now, or are you planning on executing us?”

Bariat grunted, shaking his fists, but he didn’t make an effort to attack us. “You’re lucky the hunt’s in two days. Otherwise, you would be dead where you stand.”

Edren waved his hand at him, dismissing Bariat’s threats. Then he walked toward the horse he had tied to one of the wooden poles. He careful got in the saddle, petting the well-trained horse’s furry neck. He smiled as the horse calmly neighed and put his hands on his hips, proud that the horse didn’t immediately rag-doll him. Unfortunately, his confidence didn’t last, as the horse took off unprompted, running around in the tight street. It immediately stopped in front of Bariat, rearing onto its hind legs and almost sending Edren tumbling off. Somehow, though, he managed to hang on to the reins of the horse.

Bariat began to yell at Edren for his careless actions while I took one last puff from my cigarette. Once I finished, I stood up, flicking the cigarette into a nearby garbage can. I dusted off my butt and looked at my tattered purple jacket. Green tea stains covered parts of the jacket, but the golden crest remained unharmed. I stared at it.

“Take it. It gets cold in winter,” Edren’s voice chimed in.

I grabbed the jacket, letting my arms move through the soft sleeves. It suited me, like it always had. “Yeah, I guess I’ll need to wear something warm.” I turned to face the gray clouds with a gleaming smile.

Ray handed me the reins of my horse, scratching his cheek. “I don’t know if it means anything, but I think you’re a cool person.”

I turned my grin toward Ray. “Thanks. I appreciate it.” I took the reins of my horse and hopped on.

Bariat grumbled something under his breath before we headed off back to the cathedral. Seeing the tall, white building again filled me with a sense of relief.
