Adrian started up the engines and I immediately felt better. The vigorous vibrations reminded me of why I used to enjoy sitting on the washing machine when I was a teenager. The engine noise drowned out our attempts to speak to each other, so Adrian leaned over to the back seat and pulled out some headphones with microphones attached so that we could communicate. I wondered if he had any airsick bags back there as well, but decided to not think about it in the hope that I wouldn’t need them.

In the end, all of my fears were unfounded. Surprisingly, the worst part was getting off the ground. As the plane rumbled along the runway, I felt certain we were going too slowly to take off. Even when Adrian pulled back on the controls and the plane angled up towards the sky, I still didn’t quite believe we were going to make it into the air.

Adrian didn’t notice, but I had my eyes shut for most of the ascent. Seeing the ground slowly disappear into the distance was a lot scarier when you were in the cockpit and could just reach out and open the door if you wanted to.

When the plane finally leveled off I opened my eyes and looked around. We were below the clouds, so I could still see the ground beneath us, but all I could do was distinguish between the cities and the farmland. I could just about make out cars on the road, but they looked like ants swarming around.

“See? It’s relaxing, isn’t it?” Adrian asked.

“I wouldn’t go quite that far,” I replied. I could see how it could be relaxing, but I wasn’t quite there yet. The sense of fear that had gripped my stomach from the moment I sat in the cockpit had faded significantly, but I was still gripping the seat hard enough for my knuckles to turn white and I knew I wouldn’t relax completely until the wheels were back down on the ground.

“You can see Napa just ahead of us,” Adrian said, pointing into the distance. “When we get a bit closer, I’ll show you the winery we’ll be visiting tomorrow.”

“They all look the same from here. How can you tell the difference?”

“We’re going to a winery that looks like a castle. The stone is a very distinctive color and I know roughly where it is based on the roads. It’s a shame we can’t land there. That’s one thing money can’t buy me.”

I told myself that this was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and forced myself to make the most of it. I kept looking out the window a few seconds at a time until finally I got used to seeing the ground far beneath us. The one thing I refused to look at was the propeller on the wing. I had seen it from the ground, but I didn’t want to be reminded that something so flimsy was the only thing keeping us up in the air.

“This thing works as a glider as well,” Adrian said.
