CHAPTER ELEVEN
THE NEW PARLOUR
The girls were fine: no hangovers between them. They were busy on the phones.
Claire said to me, “If it’s okay with you I can take an hour or two off. You can come with me and we can look for another flat to set up as a parlour. That’ll be exciting.”
“Another parlour. Yeah, sounds good. Yes, I’ll come with you,” I said. “It’ll give me a chance to see first-hand how this part of the business works.”
Claire made a couple of phone calls to two agents she already had on her books. The first said he had nothing suitable just now but should have in a week or two. The second said he had got a flat he felt was suitable for Claire’s needs. The flat was in the Portland Road heading towards South Norwood Hill. We could walk there in 10 minutes or so. The agent gave us the address and we arranged to meet him there. We had time for a cuppa and a fag before we set off.
The landline phone was ringing continuously with Abbie busy booking in appointments. It seemed to me that Chantel would be busy all day, provided all the bookings turned up. Sometimes, of course, the odd one might not arrive.
Claire and I left the parlour and started our walk to meet the agent. Portland Road is quite a busy road, always lots of traffic and people, all going somewhere. We met the agent at the agreed number. The flat was above a shop, of course. The entrance was about 25ft down a side alley, then the door was on the right. We all walked down the alley to the front door. The agent opened it and we went in. Once inside, the stairs went up to our right to a hall and landing, off which were the rooms. There was a lounge at the front of the building and a bedroom in the middle. Towards the back of the flat there was a kitchen and bathroom. The flat was fully furnished.
“What do you think?” I said to Claire.
“Well,” she said, “it’s not bad. Not bad at all. It’s in good condition and we could operate out of here straight away. In some respects its better than Cobden because you don’t have to go through the lounge area to go to the bathroom. The clients can come in and out without having to go through the lounge. I like that idea.” She turned to the agent and said, “I like the flat but I don’t like the entrance.”
“What’s wrong with the entrance?” I said.
“Well, it’s good for the clients, it gives them privacy as they come in, which they’ll like, but I don’t like it for the girls. It not safe for them when they come in and out. I don’t like the long alley.”
“Oh, okay,” I said, starting to get an idea of what to look for. Trying to keep in mind what the clients might be happy with and also that the girls have to be happy.
