The next day at the bookstore was Alexâs day off and Dylan Hawthorne was there. The highlight of his shift, which had become a town event every Sunday, was his story hour in the kidâs section.
It was standing room only back there and all the kids sat on the carpet in front of him in rapt attention.
If I was handing out money, I couldnât get that many kids to sit so silently.
Heâd picked a book weâd ordered a few too many of, and I knew by the size of the crowd, weâd sell out when he was done. The kid was just that good. Iâd vote for him for mayor.
While Dylan was reading, I heard the pipes upstairs thunk.
Levi was awake.
Iâd spent the night coming up with a plan, considering and then discarding the idea of a power point presentation. But for something like this I felt it best just to keep it simple.
It was now or never.
Never, part of me said. Never is fine. Never is good. Because this is going to be embarrassing no matter what he says.
But that never part of me had been in charge for too long. Light-headed and short of breath, I motioned to Dylan that I was stepping away. I walked out the back door, opened Leviâs door and shouted:
âLevi?â
His head appeared at the top of the stairs. âHey. Annie. Iâm in the middle-â
I didnât have time for that. I started up the stairs because this train was picking up speed and I couldnât stop it now.
âOkay,â he drawled. âCome on up then.â
His apartment looked the same. White walls. White floors. The dark couch. Plants. There was a yoga mat on the floor though and he was absolutely dripping sweat. It ran down his bare chest and soaked the waistband of his grey athletic shorts.
I was suddenly speechless.
And very, very thirsty.
Is that where he got those muscles? Yoga? I thought it was for stretching and relaxing. Not for muscles.
âAnnie?â he said. âYou all right?â
âIâm sorry,â I said, already winding myself into knots. Stupid. This was stupid. I was stupid. âI wonât interrupt.â
âToo late, but itâs all good.â
âNo, you were working out.â
I turned to go back down the stairs and he grabbed me by the hand, stopping me in my tracks. His hand was sweaty. I shuddered in reaction. A kind of embarrassment/desire flooding my entire body.
âAnnie, just tell me what you need?â he asked.
You. I need you.
You and all those things you said yesterday. You and your self-confidence and your easy way of living in your skin. You and the way you make my body feel with just one kiss. You and the fact youâre leaving eventually, which means I have to do this now or never.
âAre you hyperventilating? Do you need to sit down? Or some water maybe?â
I scrunched up my eyes and just said it.
âLevi. I need you to have sex with me.â
