Chapter Twelve

They were interviewed separately and then together. Adrian told the detectives everything they needed to know, repeating his real name and a summary of his background, albeit still an edited version. There were things about his complicated history with Lander and his family that made no difference to the attack, and which he preferred never to see the light of day.

Halfway through, the detectives took a call to say the Telstar had been found abandoned in Frankton, empty. It would be printed like the house had been, but the car was a rental and the agreement wasn’t in any name Adrian recognised—no surprise there—although the rental agency’s surveillance cameras would be checked anyway. Adrian wasn’t holding his breath.

Gangs were well-financed, well-connected, well-managed, ruthless business organisations with their sticky fingers in any number of shady pies. And as an enforcer, Lander knew how to cover his tracks. He’d worn gloves. He’d have stayed with friends, maybe even gang affiliates, certainly not travelled under his own name or rented a car in his own name.

The detectives were thorough and took detailed notes and lots of photos, including of Niall’s injury. And they promised to liaise with the Hawkes Bay Police to check where Lander had been at the time—rattle his cage and see what fell out. Niall hadn’t got a clear look at Lander. It was only Adrian’s word that Lander was the guy.

He struggled to quell the fear rising in his gut about what openly challenging Lander might mean down the track. Would Lander follow through on his threats as payback for bringing the cops to his door, and risk everything Adrian had built in Queenstown? Would the police shakedown be enough to put him off? Who the fuck knew? All Adrian could do was hope.

It was near midnight by the time everyone cleared out, but Adrian was determined to clean as much as he could, and Niall seemed determined to help. He’d been solid at Adrian’s side the whole way and it was doing Adrian’s head in. This squirming, wanting need that rolled in his belly every time he even looked Niall’s way showed no signs of cooling.

A flash of skin here, a waft of shower gel there, a smile, a wink, and those sexy-as-fuck bare feet that padded to and fro over Adrian’s wooden floor, blatant, wanton, and unapologetically seductive, were simply fucking with his mind. And who even knew bare feet were a thing? But as they mopped and cleaned alongside each other, the comfortable domesticity of it all was just as unsettling, maybe more so.

But Adrian could tell by the number of sideways glances Niall threw him that he was also simply biding his time. Somehow, he knew there was more to Adrian’s story than he’d told the police, and Adrian doubted Niall was going to just let it go. That ship seemed to have sailed, at least based on their earlier discussion. Niall felt . . . involved, and Adrian understood why.

But how much more, if anything, he told Niall was beginning to feel like some kind of watershed moment between them.
