* * * *

As they left the diner, Jimmy caught one last pleading look from Skate. He wanted badly to be angry at the gangbanger for infiltrating the Alley, making people like him and trust him, and then tempting Jimmy back into the abyss, but he knew he couldn’t really put the blame there. He hadn’t even originally bought the drugs from Skate to use them—only to offer a safe income the kid could pay off his bosses with. All that had changed when surgeries and incessant pain, Gabe’s withdrawal into his life with Rory, and rejection from men, even the strangers in the bars who thought him damaged goods, had plummeted Jimmy into depression. The drugs had been handy, easy. There. It hadn’t been Skate’s fault he took them.

It was his fault Skate was in trouble now.

He’d messed up, got Adam involved, brought the police down on the Greenbacks hard enough Skate felt it here in the Alley. He was in trouble, and somehow, Jimmy had to figure a way to get him out.

“So.” Cliff held the apartment building door open for Jimmy. “You want to tell me what you two were really talking about back there?”

Their stroll home had been long, hot and tiring. Jimmy sagged between his crutches, sweat sticking his shirt to his back with summer heat. “What do you mean?” More moisture trickled down Jimmy’s spine. It never failed to freak him out that Cliff could so easily put his finger on the pulse of whatever was going through Jimmy’s thoughts.

“You and Skate. That wasn’t about Peter’s apartment.” He pushed the elevator button. “I let you get away with it because the poor kid looked like a cornered mouse, and I’m pretty sure you were just lying to help him out of that corner.” His eyes darkened, threat edged into them, and Jimmy’s hackles lifted.

“Cliff—”

The elevator arrived and a passenger stepped out. Jimmy clamped his lips closed as they entered.

“No lies, Jimmy. If you’re protecting him because he sold you those drugs, I’ll find out. I’m not an idiot. We don’t need people like that in the Alley. You aren’t the only one here vulnerable to that sort of predator, and I won’t have him or anyone else putting my friends in jeopardy. When I know where you got them, I’ll be making sure Adam knows, and you can bet your ass he’ll make the bastard pay for it.”

Jimmy ran light fingers over his lips, recalling their kiss, the moment the skies had opened. He dropped his hand.

“He’s not a predator.” He was the prey, and he was going to get nabbed, one way or the other. Jimmy didn’t like the poor kid’s odds, whether his gang caught up with him or the cops did. “He—” He drew in a breath and let it out. “He’s going to kill me for telling you this.” Jimmy glanced up to see Cliff was watching him. A little bit of himself shrank away from the scrutiny, shrank towards the black hole he’d narrowly escaped, knowing he wasn’t going to give Skate up to Adam’s rage.
