CHAPTER 20

MEMPHIS

It had been days since I woke up in Maverick’s bed, days since I thought I lost him, since the moment he had a complete meltdown on the side of the road without any sort of explanation. But, he wouldn’t talk about it. Every time I mentioned the incident or tried to bring up any sort of conversation about that night, his eyes glazed over, and he shut down.

But nothing else had changed. He was still always there when I needed him, sometimes when I didn’t, and I couldn’t imagine how life would be when this was over, when we were forced to go our own way, and I’d never experience his morning hot chocolate offerings or lunchtime sandwich deliveries again.

“Are you nervous?” Sophia asked as she leaned against the counter, sipping her coffee, “I remember when I found out what Nash was, I literally wanted to shout it to the world.”

I shrugged, “I’m a bit nervous.”

“Only a bit?” She scrunched her nose up, “So what’s wrong then?”

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what was wrong, but I felt like a gloomy cloud had followed me since last week. “Nothing.”

Lotus coughed behind me, “Bullshit.”

I turned, pointing a pair of scissors at her. “Excuse me?”

She grabbed the scissors and put them back in the jar at the counter. “You heard me. Bullshit. You’ve been all gloomy since you and the brick wall went to dinner last week.”

“I have not!” I tried to act defensively, but even I knew it had fallen short.

“You have, but what do I know, I only employ you.” She grabbed a bunch of roses and walked around the counter, placing them in vats of water toward the front of the store. “Roses always bring in the customers.”

“The countdown is at an hour, have you drank your water?” Sophia chimed in, bringing the subject back to my appointment.

“I love babies,” Lotus announced. “I bet yours will seriously be the cutest. Brown wavy hair like yours, maybe green eyes, it will definitely be tall.”

“It’s not Maverick’s,” I pointed out.

“I know,” she sighed. “But, I mean . . . your kid could still have green eyes, right?”

“The baby’s father had blue. Not even a good blue, that murky blue of deception.”

“Whoa, there’s some hostility there.” Lotus leaned backward on the counter, then hiked herself up, so she was sitting on it. “I hope your baby doesn’t get deception eyes, I would never be able to babysit.”

“I’m not keeping it,” I told her, probably for the thousandth time.

“Well, if you did, don’t add me to the babysitting list, I married a Lawyer, I get enough deception.”

Sophia snorted, “This is true. I’ve seen him work his fancy words quite cleverly. It’s shocking really.” She took another sip of her coffee, then fiddled with her lid. “You know. Obviously this go around is out, but future kids . . . I think Maverick would make a pretty good dad.”

Lotus’ feet swung back and forth as she looked between us. “Is that your love for tattoos talking?”

“Well, yeah.
