“It’s not broken, so stop your whining.”

“Your boyfriend knows how to throw a punch,” he replies in a nasally wheeze. “He broke my glasses.” His voice makes me laugh as I slip a small bandage over the bridge of his nose.

I always loved tending to my guys’ wounds. They don’t get them often, but on the rare occasion Baron or Gabriel (never Silas) would come home from a job with a little glass embedded in their skin or cuts from a fight, I would sit them down in the bathroom and mend what needed to be mended.

The thought makes me homesick. And homesickness reminds me of what Gabriel said. Did he really mean what he said about staying for a while? Staying for what? Silas will never agree to an alliance, not after this. And what for? We don’t need affiliations with the cartel, we never did. That was the whole situation with my father and Maretti. Gabriel didn’t want any part in that because his father raised him to never take sides. Don’t get involved. Do the job, collect the payment, and move on.

What am I going to do if Gabriel won’t leave? I can’t stay here forever. Baron and Silas need me. What if I’m forced to choose?

“I have to tell you something,” Quentin says, and my hands stop, waiting to hear what he’s about to tell me. I’m not afraid to admit that in the past few days, I’ve actually grown fond of Quentin, and not in a romantic way. But he’s my friend now.

“What is it?”

“I got some security footage the other day, but I never planned to tell you about it. I don’t even know why I’m telling you now…”

“What footage?” I say flatly, my blood running cold.

“At the false location…where I found you, there was an ambush.”

“What happened? Quentin, what happened?” I shriek.

“Your guys are fine. They shot up a few of the guards my dad left there, and they released all the girls he was holding, but your guys seemed to get out alive.”

My lungs relax and the air rushes out of me. My shoulders actually ache from holding in that tension. Sitting on the stool across from him, I let this information sink in. Silas and Baron came looking for us, but they’ll never find us here. I don’t even know where here is.

But why would Quentin tell me this?

“I was on board with the whole Gabriel plan from the start. My father wanted his nephew back, and I was sure it was a family vendetta thing, but now…”

“Now what?”

He tosses his towel against the counter. Then he storms away from me, and I feel as if I’m on the brink of something good. If we can get Quentin on our side, he could easily help us get out of here.

“My father preaches about family and loyalty, but he only cares about you so long as you provide him with something. If you’re useless, you’re of no value to him.”

“So, what does he want with Gabriel?”

“Another member of his team? Someone else to protect him and his legacy.
