CHAPTER 9

EIGHT WEEKS TO GO

Day 1: Same as Day 1 of the previous month

I did this yesterday and therefore I’m doing Saturday’s one-hour run/walk today.

Eve wakes me up with breakfast in bed, also with the news that the land war has started. Off to church, and as you can imagine a lot of prayers are said for the forces in the Gulf. After the service we collect some flowers that were put in the church yesterday for a wedding, and deliver them to the bride’s mother, who is an old friend of Eve’s. Her son-in-law is off to Germany today with the Army.

I volunteered to help during the week to paint the cross, it has been taken down to replace the fluorescent tubes and an overhaul.

I drive to Bitterne to pick Julie up. I then change into my running gear and set off towards the Common. The minute I leave home I know that this is going to be a bad run. My calf muscle in my right leg has started hurting and progressively gets worse. I realise that enough is enough and head for home, arriving 30 minutes after leaving.

I place a 2-lb packet of frozen peas on my leg, and then have Sunday lunch.

When I was having physio after my back operation, I remember a physio telling me about an elderly lady: she was told to place a frozen packet of peas on her swollen ankle. About three weeks later she arrived in the physiotherapy department with a carrier bag full of packets of frozen peas. She explained that she didn’t like peas so brought them in for somebody who did. She hadn’t thought of using something other than peas.

I spend the evening with my leg raised, feeling sorry for myself.

Day 2: Rest day

Just as well: my leg still hurts, and there is no way I can run today. Kevin leaves for Wigan this morning; I pick Eve up from work at lunchtime to be told that, due to the economic situation, they won’t be able to take her on full-time. This is very annoying, because she was told two weeks ago that she had the job.

We take Bouncer, one of our two dogs, to the vet this afternoon for his booster injection.

I’m off to The Dell this evening for the FA Cup game with Nottingham Forest. Saints draw 1-1 and now face a replay at Forest next Monday.

Kev phoned to say that he got redirected to Coventry, and will be there until next Monday, working a 15-hour night. Poor Kev.

Day 3: 50-Minute medium run

I got up this morning with my leg feeling a bit better, but not quite right. Eve is home all day today; I set off to see Bob at the clinic.

I have never known Bob to be miserable, and today he’s his usual happy self. We start off by going through a few lunges and other exercises. We spend a fair bit of time putting the world to rights, and I tell him about my leg.
