Chapter 5
PIERRE WOKE to his phone vibrating on the floor somewhere. He carefully climbed out of bed and scooped up his pants. He grabbed the phone, managing to answer it before it went to voicemail. “Pierre Ravelle,” he said quietly, heading for the bathroom.
“Pierre, it’s Donald.” He sounded breathless.
Pierre checked the time on the phone. A little after six. He crept into the bathroom and closed the door. “What can I do for you? I was going to call to talk to you today.”
“About Jordan?” Donald asked.
“Yes.” A cold chill ran up his back.
“I saw your name on one of the case visit reports. I’m sorry to call so early, but I have to go in and I didn’t want to call from the office.”
“What’s happened?”
“We received a call about him. It came in on our tip line. They said that Jordan was leaving Jeremiah unsupervised and wasn’t feeding him properly. We have to investigate each case, but I heard you were seeing him, so I thought I’d check with you before this went any further.”
Pierre opened the bathroom door, peering at Jordan. He kept his voice low. “I have seen nothing but kindness and care. Jeremiah is the center of Jordan’s world. He is definitely well cared for in every way, and I will testify to that in front of anyone you need me to.” Pierre’s spine went cold as he realized the implications of what he’d just been told. “I was going to call you because we got a visit from a social worker who wasn’t very social, and I wanted to know if something had happened. As far as I understand the process, things should be winding up and the final hearing should largely be a formality.”
“Yes. And that’s where this should be.”
“When did this call come in?”
“A week ago. But we didn’t get to it right away. And the department did send Quinton Davis out, where he encountered you.” Donald chuckled. He wasn’t speaking very loudly, so Pierre concluded he was still at home and trying not to wake everyone. “I thought I’d follow up specifically, and I’m glad I did.”
“I need one more favor. I need you to call me if any other reports come in. This could be related to something I’m working on.” Pierre knew he was stretching, but it was possible, especially after what the judge had said at dinner. Alarm bells were going off big-time in his head.
“You think this call was punitive?” Donald asked.
Pierre had to be careful about how much he said. “I’m not sure, but this is work-related, so just call me if you get more reports, because the one you got isn’t true.”
“That’s great to know. We were suspicious. Jordan has worked with us so well and has been incredibly cooperative.”
“Jeremiah means the world to him, and I wouldn’t think he’d do anything to hurt him in a million years. Heck, he’d go without before he’d let any harm come to Jeremiah.” This was pretty messed up as far as Pierre was concerned.
