Not a Hoot
I keep pinching my arm to make sure I didn’t dream the whole thing.
I’m in! I’m in! I still can’t believe it.
After the talent show auditions, Mrs. O’Flannagan was proud of her sons and her daughter. She couldn’t find the right words to thank Zach and the rest of my family, so she decided to show her gratitude by inviting us to dinner. I could tell Zach planned to thank her and reject the offer, but Joy—together with Archie—made sure they drowned out his response with a mysterious drum accident that pulled his attention away while Archie kindly accepted the invitation. Unfortunately, due to my big pile of homework, I decline the invitation and take advantage of the “free” time.
A couple hours later, with only two out of the ten Physics homework assignments complete, I’m ready to give up. Whoever thought I belonged in the senior class was utterly wrong.
I glance at the book and a mean thought crosses my mind. Let’s see what speed and force you achieve as I throw you across the room.
“Stupid Physics!” I reprimand the book, frustrated I can’t even calculate the answer to something as simple as that.
“Having a hard time with it?” A voice from the staircase makes my hand shoot straight to my heart.
Big Guy, I’ll develop a heart condition if I keep getting scared like this.
I stand as Zach steps into my room. “Yeah, I’ve missed one month, and last week, I practically skipped the class.”
He laughs. “Lyra or Archie could tutor you, bring you up to speed.”
I rock back and forth on my heels, guessing that at this rate, it’ll take me at least eight hours to finish only the physics homework. “I don’t want to be a nuisance.”
I’ve been busy, but Lyra and Archie also work hard. I hardly see them in the afternoons when I’m home.
“Nonsense, Samantha.” Zach walks farther inside. “If you need help with something, just tell us, and we’ll be happy to help you.”
He stops a few feet from my desk, his gaze shifting to the picture of Mom and Abigail, and his smile wavers.
I fix my gaze on the picture, too. “She was beautiful.”
“Yes, she was.” Sadness tightens the muscles in his face. “Sometimes, I wonder what our lives would be like if she was still around.”
Between my lack of memories of her and the fact Saint Magdalene always felt like home to me, it never made me consider what life would be like if Mom hadn’t died.
The closest thing I ever imagined was living with Grams, and it usually happened after I visited her for a few weeks in summer. When I returned to Saint Magdalene’s, Brittany’s bullying was always at its worst.
“What was she like?” I ask.
One corner of his lips stretches upwards, but it never reaches his eyes. “She was a beautiful woman, inside and out. One thing I remember most is how she loved to make us laugh. Even on the tough days, no matter how tired she was, she would always put a smile on our lips.
