Chapter Twelve
Cookie woke up feeling a little anxious. After all, it was her first day of working fulltime, and as excited as she was, there was something so different about committing to working every day. It meant no more lazy mornings. No long chats on the phone during work hours. But it also meant that she would meet new people and be able to indulge her love of baking in exchange for much needed money. There was no word from April as to what her finances would look like in the divorce, and that alone was enough reason to be up and at it this morning.
Thankfully the girls were up and getting ready for school. Theyâd promised to feed Penny and clean her litter. Cookie was more than pleased that they had taken to the cat so easily. If only they'd take to cleaning their rooms with the same vigor. But she shouldn't complain, given that they'd both started doing their own laundry.
As she heard the girls coming down the stairs into the kitchen, she said, "I've walked Rufus already. And I've got the early shift this morning, so I'll see you both after school. Okay?"
"Sure Mom," Lilly called out as she took the peanut butter out of the fridge.
Cookie stared at her daughter. "On my croissant. You're putting peanut butter on my delicious croissant?" she said, ruffling Lilly's blond hair, secretly pleased that Lilly hadn't dyed her beautiful curls. She'd be glad when the bizarre hair color period in her girls' lives was over. Thankfully, there had been no mention of tattoos recently.
"Mom, don't mess up my hair, and yes, I'm having peanut butter."
A thought suddenly occurred to Cookie. "Would you like it if I could create a peanut butter croissant?"
"With jam?" Lilly asked.
"Sounds spectacular," Amy said, entering the kitchen, her purple hair swinging around her shoulders. "How soon can you do it?"
"I have no idea if I can, but I'm going to work on it. In the mean time I've got to run." She kissed both of them. "Have a good day. And we'll celebrate my new job tonight."
"Dinner at Joseph's?" Lilly asked.
Joseph's was a new Greek restaurant in town. "Why not?"
"We'll check the menu online to see what their specialties are," Amy said, on her way to the fridge.
With that, Cookie headed out the door to her car, eager to get started on her day and her new life. It was a little chilly that morning and the sky was overcast, but nothing dampened her mood. This would be an awesome day.
