Chapter 8

Aiden ended the call on his cell phone when Todd entered Coffee Corner Cafe at precisely 11:15 looking even better than Aiden had remembered him from the department store. The light blue of his hospital scrubs helped bring out the color of his alluring eyes.

Aiden, who had been watching the door like a hungry hawk, waved the tall man over to his table.

"Your jaw looks better. I can hardly see the bruised spot," Todd commented right away which seemed totally appropriate since he looked so appealing in his sharp-looking hospital scrubs.

"I took your advice. I put ice on it as soon as I got home."

Todd nodded his approval. "So, how did you know this was my favorite table?" Todd asked as he took his seat in the cozy shop.

"Why do I get the feeling you would have said that no matter where I was sitting?"

Todd's irresistible grin stretched from ear to ear. "You sure figured out all my secrets too soon. I guess I need some new material."

Aiden wasted no time. He picked up the plastic shopping bag from its place on the floor by his chair and placed it on the table.

"Someone wants to get right down to business, I see," Todd commented.

"In case you were in a hurry," Aiden said curtly.

"Oh. OK."

Aiden could see from the look on Todd's face that he hadn't been expecting such a gruff manner, pretty much bordering on a brush-off. Aiden bit the inside of his lip. He knew he was sabotaging any chance he had of Todd being interested in him, but he couldn't help himself. If Todd was only putting on this charming act because he wanted the stupid toy, whether for an actual sick nephew or his man cave collection or whatever, Aiden would rather know sooner than later.

Of course, it didn't help that he'd been talking to Tracey on his cell phone right before Todd got there. She had been filling his head with all this negativity. As a result, Aiden had his defense mechanisms on high alert.

Todd took out his wallet and pulled out several bills. "I ran out on my break and went to the ATM. I've got the cash this time." He started to count out the money. "We never mentioned the actual price. Is double what you paid acceptable?"

Aiden shook his head back and forth.

"Someone's a greedy little Christmas capitalist. Two and a half times? Three times as much?"

Aiden's face softened a bit. "That's not what I meant. I don't want anything extra. Just what I paid for it at the sale is fine. If that's all you're really here for, I'd rather just sell you the robot and get it over with."

Todd looked genuinely confused. "I don't understand..."

"When you offered to pay me for the robot because I'd grabbed the box a fraction of a second before you, that just happened to fit into why my friend and I were at the Black Friday sale in the first place. She wanted to get
