When I left for work on Wednesday morning, the snow had cleared and Spud the snowman was a shadow of his former self. I retrieved the soggy hat and scarf, feeling that same sadness I’d felt as a child when the snow melted away the snowmen that Dad and I had lovingly created. By Thursday morning, Spud was nothing more than a lump of snow, a couple of twigs and a handful of stones. The wildlife had obviously helped themselves to the carrot.

Rich and Dave had done some asking around and discovered someone in the next village with a red Land Rover Defender for sale. Rich knew quite a bit about cars and assured me it was in great condition so I dipped into my inheritance from Gramps.

One of the lads Dave worked with had been looking for a small car for his wife so I reluctantly said goodbye to my beautiful Fiat 500. As I handed over the keys on Saturday morning, it struck me that this was it: I was never going to live back in Whitsborough Bay. My home, job, business venture and all my friends were now on the Wolds. I’d always imagined Whitsborough Bay being the place I’d settle, yet the Wolds already felt like my home. I missed the sea but I could still visit. I didn’t miss living there, though, because what was there left for me? Dad. That was all.
