Chapter 8

Eyes wide, Lisa watched Rye. She opened her mouth to speak, licked her lips and tried to think. It was impossible. His words kept echoing inside her, making her tremble. She hadn’t thought beyond the pleasure of his kisses. She should have, and she knew it. She was innocent but she wasn’t stupid.

“I’m s-sorry,” she said helplessly, hating to know that she had caused him pain. “I wasn’t thinking how it would be for you. I never meant any hurt.”

When Rye saw Lisa’s taut expression he swore harshly and sat up in a single, savage movement. Then he closed his eyes, because if he kept on looking at her, he would reach for her, kiss her slowly, deeply, seducing her before she had a chance to say yes or no.

Suddenly he sensed the warmth of her breath against his hand in the instant before her lips touched his skin. When she held his hand against her cheek and whispered apologies, he felt the trembling of her body and knew that right now there was as much fear and unhappiness as passion in Lisa. The realization chastened him, cooling the fever that had been on the edge of burning out of control.

“It’s not your fault,” Rye whispered, pulling Lisa gently onto his lap, soothing her with a gentle hug. “It’s mine. I knew where I was going. You didn’t.” He smiled wryly. “But I didn’t know I could want a woman the way I want you. It took me by surprise.” He brushed his lips over her cheek and tasted tears. “Don’t cry, baby. It’s all right. I know myself better now. I won’t take either one of us by surprise again, and I won’t do anything you don’t want. You can have as few or as many of my kisses as you like, however you like them, wherever you like them. Just don’t be afraid of me. I’d never force anything from you, Lisa. You know that, don’t you?”

The words reassured Lisa, but not as much as the soothing, undemanding kisses that Rye gave to her forehead and cheeks, the tip of her nose and the corners of her mouth. After a few moments she let out her breath in a long sigh and relaxed against his chest. He swept up her hair and draped it over his shoulder so that silky strands cascaded down his back. He wished that he was naked so that he might feel the texture as well as the weight of her beautiful hair. He turned his face into the pale, fragrant strands and inhaled deeply, stroking her hair with his dark cheek.

Seeing the sensual pleasure that her hair gave to Rye sent curious tremors through the pit of Lisa’s stomach. She remembered the moment when she had awakened to find him turning his face from side to side in her hair as though he were bathing in the warm, flaxen cascade. She remembered a few weeks before, when he had nuzzled his teasing,
