Chapter Twelve

Maxwell

I had to return to Scarborough by Sunday. Arrangements needed to be made for my relocation, and Christmas was around the corner. As many times as I’d tried to convince Krew to come with me, he’d refused. First he’d claimed he couldn’t leave Andre in a pickle over the holidays when the bar would be busy. When I told him it could be worked out, he’d refused to leave his cat. It was then I recognized, he needed space.

All this was overwhelming for him.

After his meltdown Thursday night, I’d held him on my lap for over an hour. He’d cried until he couldn’t, then he’d gone inside his head for a while and just zoned out. But the entire time, his arms had remained wrapped tightly around me, and his head never lifted from my shoulder.

I’d taken him to bed after that and sent him far away from his troubled mind using pleasure so he didn’t have to think anymore. Then he’d slept. Long into the night, he’d woken and cuddled up against me. I wasn’t naïve. His tentative surrender was just that: Tentative. How long it would last would be the question. Returning to Scarborough was risky but unavoidable.

On Sunday morning, I met Andre at the bar. I’d called and asked all four boys to meet me there for an early lunch of pizza at eleven so I could get paperwork signed and find out their feelings on the change of ownership before I hit the road.

Krew had spent the previous night at home. He’d gone quiet over the weekend. The vibrant, sarcastic man was gone. He hadn’t pulled away, but his wheels turned relentlessly, and his doubt sat on the surface.

I was pleasantly surprised when he was first to arrive at just past ten thirty. When he strolled in, dressed in a pair of emerald green skinny jeans, a white long-sleeved shirt, and a red scarf, I smiled.

“You’re looking festive,” Andre remarked. “Are you feeling better? Rigger tells me you’ve been unwell.”

Krew’s gaze darted to me and back to Andre before he stammered, “Yeah, doing okay now. Must have been a touch of the flu or something.”

I quirked a brow and coughed, drawing the focus off Krew since it was evident he was lying through his teeth. It hadn’t occurred to me he’d skipped out of work the other night when he’d come storming my hotel room. Had he been to work at all this weekend?

“Well, those pizzas are probably ready to be picked up. I’ll just hop over and grab them.”

“I can go,” Andre said, clapping me on the shoulder. “You stay. The boys will be here any time. You want to talk with them, and I know your time is short today.”

“Thanks.”

Andre disappeared leaving Krew and I alone—but it wouldn’t be for long since it was nearing eleven.

“I didn’t realize you’d played hooky Thursday night. Were you in at all this weekend?”

Krew shrugged and ducked his gaze to the floor as he approached the bar and took a seat.
