Chapter Nine
Luck was on my side when I called Airik's work and he answered. I hadn't missed him; he was still there. He answered on the second ring.
âHey. I was just thinking about you.â
I avoided the snarky comment playing just inside my mouth, trying to burst through.
âHey. So, my brother's mock trial is today, will come down and be a part of it, for me? He is needing to fill a spot.â
He was quiet a moment, I didn't even try and gauge what he was thinking.
âYeah, sure. What time do I need to be there?â
I checked my watch before I answered. I'm not sure why, it's not like I didn't know the answer to that question.
âCan you be there in an hour?â
âAn hour? Libby, I need to go by and get a new phone today.â
I put on my sweetest voice.
âPlease? Can you go by after? I swear this will be the last thing I ever ask of you.â
âAh-huh...â
I wanted to push him further, but I was afraid he would catch on I was up to something. If he had that thought, this trial would never happen. So, I waited for his reply, biting my lip the entire time. The seconds seemed to tick on just to spite me.
âFine! I'll be there in an hour. But after, I'm going to get another phone.â
âThanks. It's at the same building they did the holiday play. See you then, Iâm heading over there now to help prepare.â
âI remember...â
âAwesome. See you then. Gotta go.â
I didn't wait for him to say goodbye before I hung up the phone. I just hope this was one time, he wouldn't be late...or lie that he was coming.
After I stowed away my phone, I looked up just in time to see my Half Bitch walking towards me, a big smile on her face.
âSo, what kind of trouble are we dishing out?â
I matched her smile, âThe petty but good kind.â
âOh, my favorite. What are we doing?â
I motioned her over to a corner booth, âSit, I will tell you all about it.â
I followed her over and once we were seated, I laid it out for her. All of it.
âWell, I found out that Airik has been cheating on me...â
âI'm sorry, Libby, you want me to hit him with a shovel? I have one at home...I can run and go get it.â
I laughed, âNo, I have one better.â
âBetter than a shovel across the nose? This I have to hear.â
I laughed again at her joke. She knew, though I was making jokes, and laughing at them, that I was crushed. I didn't have to tell her. We had been friends since we were kids, at this point, we had our own language and could speak without using words and know exactly what the other was saying just by facial expressions. It was annoying to people around us, but it was just something that had happened as our friendship grew over the years.
âWell, first, I checked his phone to confirm my suspicions. They were spot on, unfortunately.
