Eventually, my grandmother regained her composure and started picking up the plates and coffee cups and clearing the dining room. To my surprise, my grandfather showed up immediately and started cleaning right alongside her. He helped her stack every plate, lift every crumb from the table, and collect every knife, fork, and spoon.

His patience was astounding. In sharp contrast to the abrupt man from half an hour ago, he was now unbelievably calm, working peacefully and productively beside my grandmother. The two of them struck a rhythm of back and forth between the dining room and the kitchen, working tacitly, efficiently, in concert like two bees. I couldn’t believe it.

Finally, the house was put back together, restored to its pre-guest tranquility. The evening was advanced by this point, but before going to bed, I saw my grandfather approach my grandmother and give her a gentle hug. He tenderly, if briefly, told her how glad he was that she was back with him, and that the house, their nest, was back to its normal order. No ill feeling remained, and the two partners, lovers, bees, went off to bed, in harmony once again.
