“WHY WON’T YOU COME WITH us?” Sasha asked in Russian the following morning. “I don’t want to go if you don’t come.”

Nina wasn’t about to belittle his fear. He’d known only privation and loneliness in Russia. For him it was a place of internal exile, of indifference and friendlessness. For her it was a place of privilege and duplicity, loss and danger. Good reasons for neither of them to return.

The boy deserved a chance to overcome his demons. Maybe he wouldn’t enjoy the trip, but that wasn’t as important as discovering his father wouldn’t abandon him.

She didn’t want to rob Sasha of that confidence. Jarrod had made it clear he wouldn’t take the child without her, that he needed her, not just as a translator but to help his son feel more secure.

And what about his sister? If Jarrod didn’t go over there, she might be deprived of an opportunity, too. Did she remember having a brother? Did she wonder what had happened to him? Did she miss him?

It had been sixteen years since Nina had been home. She’d read every article, every interview, every human interest story she could find about the political, economic and social upheavals that had taken place since she’d left.

She was being selfish, she concluded.

“Guess what?” she told him. “I’m going with you.”

“Yay!” Sasha shouted.

Later, when he was outside playing with Laika, Nina informed Jarrod of her decision. He took her hands and smiled, making her wonder if he could see her nervousness. Then he kissed her, and for a moment she lost herself in the stimulating sensation of his lips on hers and the secure feeling of his arms around her.

“Thank you,” he murmured, releasing her.

She was left to wonder that night if he was referring to the trip or the kiss.
