Chapter Seven

A few days later Shane had just hung up the phone when Mariah walked into the trailer after lunch. As usual, she’d been to her parents’ home to see her dad.

And Shane had missed her like crazy.

Two nights ago she’d asked him not to push a personal relationship, and he hadn’t. They both knew that their concentration had to be focused on the project, and Mariah had been working overtime, trying to help her mother deal with her father’s diabetes.

“Hi,” she said as she went to her desk.

“Hi, yourself.” He grinned as she bent over her desk, enjoying the way her jeans fit her shapely legs and round bottom. When she stood up, she turned and glared at him as if she knew what he’d been thinking.

“Don’t you think you’ll get more work done if you keep your mind on business?” She fought a smile.

“Since you’re so good at reading my mind, see if you can guess what I’m going to do now.” He crossed the room, reached for her, but she was too quick and avoided his grasp. She glanced toward the door as if someone might walk in at any moment. “Shane, behave.”

He did as she asked and backed off. “You’re just too tempting.”

“Well, try to restrain yourself.” She backed away and sat down at her desk. “This is a workplace.”

“Then let’s continue this tonight. Let’s go out to dinner at the steakhouse.” He wanted to convince Mariah that they made a good team and pitch to her how they should continue their personal relationship.

“I thought we talked about this. We aren’t going to get involved.”

“We are involved. I want to spend time with you, Mariah. I want to take you out on a date.”

She hesitated, and he knew she was tempted. “I can’t. I told my dad I’d come by for dinner tonight.”

Great. “How’s your dad feeling? Any idea when he’ll be returning to work?” Easton had been running his wife and daughter ragged. He thought nothing of summoning Mariah to the house several times during the day and evening.

“I think next week.”

As far as Shane was concerned, the one good thing about all this was that Easton had been off his back. And that made his job easier. But he also knew how exhausting this ordeal had been for Mariah. “Your dad is one of the project investors. I’d gladly fill him in on how things are progressing here.”

Mariah tossed him a skeptical look.

“Okay. Maybe that isn’t a good idea.” Shane was desperate. “So if you can’t do dinner tonight, how about we take off early and have a drink? There’s something I’d like to discuss with you.”

Although they’d spent a lot of time together at the site, they hadn’t been out in public. He wanted them to be a couple.

“Maybe that’s not a good idea right now,” she hedged.

That hurt. “Well then, tell me when it will be a good idea.”

She remained silent.

Maybe she didn’t want them to be together. “I guess I misread your signals.
