CHAPTER TEN
DEAN
My mind whirled as I processed the events of the previous day. Standing up to my parents had felt great until I chickened out of going through with it. Yet again. At least I hadn’t backed down completely. Even if I hadn’t exactly confirmed my plans to leave university either.
Rowan believed in me. She’d told me as much again the previous day while I spent an hour scrubbing flour and icing sugar off every surface in her bloody kitchen. I spent the night researching other Instagram fitness stars who ran their own video related businesses. It would be a learning curve, but I was sure that I could do it. I needed more time though. If I stayed in uni until the end of first year, it would buy me around six months where I could do minimal effort to get through, with maximum effort on building a brand before Dad cut me off completely. Then I wouldn’t need to rely on Danny. And maybe I’d have the freedom to travel more too. Maybe to Australia, or Europe, or Paris perhaps…
Damn it.
I thought sleeping with Rowan would finally release the hold she seemed to have over me. The obsession with her that brooded deep within me. It hadn’t. Every sigh, every moan, even every flinch had been just intoxicating. How would she react to different sensations? Different positions? I needed to know.
The thought of heading back to Manchester without discovering more of her was proving problematic. I’d had no issues with one-night stands or brief flings before. Maybe it was the taboo of her being Danny’s sister. Yeah that had to be it.
I’d go back to Manchester and there would be other girls and it would all be fine. There was no point getting tied up in something so fleeting.
She’s just another girl.
My phone lit up with a text from Rowan, taunting my attempts to quash my fixation with her.
ROWAN: Hey Dean, there’s a party on at a friend’s house tonight, want to crash?
Go to an academy party. Lame. I began to type out a decline to the invitation when a vision of Rowan being hit on by some drunk slimeball flicked through my mind. I shouldn’t have cared. But I did.
ME: Sure. What time?
ROWAN: I’m going with Katie, she’s finally forgiven me for not telling her about what happened at my party. Now that I’ve filled her in on all the details, we’re okay again. So maybe stop by a little later, give us some time together first?
She’d told Katie? I hoped that it didn’t mean she saw us hooking up as something more than it was. That’s all it had been, a hookup. Except that you can’t get her out of your head, dumbass.
Going to the party was a bad plan. Leading her on wouldn’t be fair.
ROWAN: Hope you aren’t freaking out over there. We only have a couple of days until you need to go back, and I need to focus on exams. I want to have fun!
Relief washed through me.
