Chapter Eleven

Todd sat at the best corner table at Rocco’s—the one overlooking the old, iconic tree-lined street of Church Avenue. He could even see Marietta River if he craned his neck enough, where the sun was just now setting and turning the water a deep, orange gold.

He hadn’t dressed up because he hadn’t wanted her to think this was a date. Only because he didn’t think his ego could take it if she didn’t want to think of it as a date. But he was thinking of it as a date. God help him.

When he’d picked up the phone to call her yesterday evening, it had been to ask her to go celebrate the fact that they’d saved a little boy’s life. Well, she’d saved a little boy’s life—he’d just gotten him warm afterward. He was going to jump in. But damn if he hadn’t been fast enough.

He’d been planning on asking her to Grey’s for a drink. But before he could get the sentence out, the location had changed to Rocco’s, and then the intention had morphed into something completely different.

And now, here he sat. A nice older couple whom he’d helped with their tent a few weeks ago was watching him from across the restaurant, the looks on their faces parental and expectant. So were a few of the servers, who looked anxiously toward the heavy, ornately carved wooden doors every time they opened.

He loved Marietta. But he was still getting used to the fact that his personal life would probably never be personal again.

He rubbed the back of his neck and nodded at the couple, who smiled back.

And then, Molly walked through the door.

Todd looked over and had to work to keep his mouth from falling open. She’d been beautiful that first day on the trail, her smooth, ivory skin scrubbed clean. Her hair pulled back, making her eyes look impossibly big and blue inside that pretty face. But now? Now she was exquisite.

Spotting him, she smiled and walked across the room. She wore a dress—something soft and blue that wrapped around her waist in such a way that brought out her curves. Until now she’d been hiding her body underneath hiking clothes. He’d gotten a hint though. When he’d kissed her, he’d felt those feminine swells and dips. And now, looking at her, he wanted to run his hands down her hips and back up again. He wanted her completely naked, with nothing between them but a sheen of sweat.

Swallowing hard, he stood and pulled out her chair. She tucked her hair behind her ear and sat, looking up at him.

Jesus, she was gorgeous. He sat again and tried to ignore the way the room had died to a complete hush the second she’d walked in.

“I didn’t think this through,” he said quietly, leaning forward. “I forgot you’re kind of the main attraction around here. Do you want to go somewhere else?”

She winked and it made his heart thud laboriously inside his chest. Something else he wasn’t used to, but that was beginning to turn him inside out just the same.
