We'll Be Waiting

10 years ago, New York City

“What do you want from me?” I awkwardly held my son closer to my body.

I had the weird sense that Signoria Vittoria was about to rip him away from me, that I would never see him again. The idea of losing him hurt way more than when I saw Enzo kissing Donata half an hour ago.

“You need me as much as I need you.” She sat across from me on the second recliner. “I think we can both agree that without my help, you and your son don’t stand a chance against Angelo. For now, he thinks you’re dead. But he won’t stop until he sees your body. It’s how he found you in Italy. He’s like a dog with a bone. I swear he followed your scent all the way there. He was following Don Valentino’s orders, but there’s a part of him that also wants revenge. Look at what he did to you. How he chose to kill you a second time.”

Angelo watching me with hate while his man stabbed me, Rex unconscious on the floor, and all the blood was my recurring nightmare. Every night, I saw that horror movie on repeat. I didn’t need Signoria Vittoria to remind me how much Angelo wanted to see me dead.

I needed her to stay alive. I had no one else to turn to.

After Rex lied to me about Enzo. I didn’t know if I could trust him. His father was the reason I was in this mess. Was that why Rex decided to help me? To keep me close until it was time to get rid of me? I leaned back in the chair, feeling drained again. I refused to believe Rex was the bad guy here. But how could he not be?

“Did you know Angelo was ordered to kill Enzo. To make it look like an accident?” I asked.

“Yes.” Her gaze dropped to my lap and the sleeping baby. She reached over and touched his head. “Michael is an idiot if he thinks Don Valentino is going to let his family live. Valentino’s beyond paranoid now.”

“Rex told me about the by-laws. He said the five original families cannot kill each other. Enzo is still an Alfera, even if he’s father decided to walk out on everything.”

“Rex is right. But Michael left the Society. He created a loophole. Enzo’s best shot at surviving the new king is for him to never give Don Valentino any reason to go after him.”

“Why would Don Alfera do this to his family? Enzo could’ve died.” My chest tightened the same way it had for the past year every time I thought of him dead, lying somewhere all alone. When my eyes welled up with tears, I pushed the thought away and focused on his happy face, the one I’d seen earlier. That image of him with someone else hurt way less than all the nights I’d spent thinking he was gone forever. “It was cruel what he did.
