"Less than a minute."

"When you got there, what did you find?"

"Sharon," Chad said. "She was alone. She was

kneehng near the edge with her eyes closed."

"Was she calling out for Ann?"

"She called out for Ann several times before we got

to her."

"What happened next?" John asked.

"I scanned the area for Ann. I had the flashlight. I couldn't find her. We kept calling out her name. Then

Paul wanted us to lower him over the side with a

rope."

"Why?"

"He was hoping maybe Ann had caught a ledge as

she fell."

"Was there any chance of that?"

"There was a chance," Chad said.

"But weren't you against Paul's idea?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I thought the chance was remote. Also, the wind

was blowing hard. I didn't have the proper equipment.

I thought it was a dangerous move."

"Did you try to talk Paul out of going over the

side?"

"Yes."

"He was adamant?"

"He was upset. We all were. He was willing to take

the risk if there was a chance in a million he would

find Ann."

"How much rope did you have with you?"

"A hundred feet."

"How many feet was it to the bottom of the cliflP?"

"Five hundred feet/'

"So Paul knew before he went over the side that

he was only going a little way down the side of the

diff?"

"Yes/'

"How much experience did Paul have rock climbing?"

"Not much. I had shown him a few things when he

first moved here."

"You were the expert. How come you didn't go over

the side?"

"I wanted to. Paul insisted that he'd go. He thought

I was in no shape to risk it."

"Were you?"

"I could have handled it."

"How many flashlights did you have at this point?"

"When I went back for the rope, I got a second

flashlight. It was the most powerful one we had with

us. I always bring it when I go camping."

"Did Paul take this flashlight with him when he

went over the side?"

"Yes. He tucked it in his belt."

"Were you following him with the second flashlight?"

"No. I was feeding my brother the line. Paul didn't

want a light on him. He was afraid it would blind

him."

"For all practical purposes, wasn't Paul invisible

once he went over the side?"

"No. I could see him the whole time. So could

Fred."
