It had taken us a little time, but, eventually, we persuaded Mallick that his presence on the island would severely compromise the mission by alerting Quan to the possibility of us knowing about him. Also, we suggested that the team needed the confident leadership of their director in their ears, overseeing their actions from the control centre. Our best bet was keeping the operation as close to the original as possible now that Donahue wouldn’t be caught off guard if his dad showed up again.

Mallick issued the three of us special sets of bronze earpieces marked with a dark-red stripe. These sets had a direct line to his Tetra-Screen while still being able to switch and sync with the main comms, so we could connect with the rest of the team. The four of us spent a couple of hours talking about everything that had happened the last time, and what we needed to do to cover our bases.

However, one thing hadn’t been resolved. Wren was still convinced she would be more helpful if she went along with us to Cyril’s island.

“I’m coming this time, Alex,” she tried again as Donahue and I strolled toward the weapons vault.

“No,” he replied in a tired tone and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I thought you would understand by now. I’ve told you multiple times why you can’t come with us. Stop bringing it up.”

She tucked her messy hair behind one ear. “We already know Kyler Quan’s the traitor. I can’t help you anymore from here.”

“Wren, you could die. You know how you can help me? By not dying.”

“He makes a good point,” I added, which only earned me a glare from her.

“Well, if we keep failing, we could be stuck in this time loop forever,” Wren’s voice intensified, “Or it could just end, and we would all die for good!”

Her voice was getting louder, so I instinctively glanced around to see if anyone had heard her, but the hallway was empty.

“No, Wren.” Donahue shook his head. “No.”

Wren’s face grew red. She gritted her teeth and turned around, stomping furiously down the hall without turning back.

Donahue watched her for a while before he noticed me staring at him. He narrowed his eyes and spoke in an irritated tone, “What, Tolli?”

“Nothin’.” I shrugged. “Just remind me never to ask your permission for anything.”

That also earned me a glare from Donahue.

Upon arriving at the weapons vault, we immediately got to work gathering equipment for the mission, and since we were about an hour early, we had the whole place to ourselves. We loaded our laser tasers with short, cylindrical cartridges that glowed a deep red from the laser shells encased inside. We slipped them onto our tactical belts. I noticed Donahue hesitate as he retrieved an X-82 out of a sealed compartment in the wall.

“What’s up?”

He mumbled, “I can still see the look on his face.”

“Huh?” My brow wrinkled. Whose face?”

“Kyler Quan’s. . .I-I didn’t have a choice.” Donahue swallowed hard as he mindlessly played with the tiny explosive.
