Chapter 22

Maggie

New Orleans.

Vali just asked me to go to New Orleans.

With him.

My heart is pounding with a mixture of nervousness, excitement, and anticipation as I drive down the dark streets. When I pull into the drive at my house, I notice the kitchen light is still on which means my mama is awake. Can I tell her a man asked me to go away with him for a weekend? What would she say?

My parents still haven’t even met Vali, but I want them to… eventually. I’m just not sure this is how I want to officially introduce them.

Mom… Dad… this is Vali Erickson. We’re not using labels, so he’s not technically my boyfriend, but we do all the things boyfriends and girlfriends do and he wants me to go to New Orleans with him. What do you say?

Falling forward, I brace myself on the steering wheel and wish my situation was different. If I was a normal twenty-four-year-old and lived on my own, this wouldn’t be a big deal. But since I do live with my parents and they depend on me to help them run the feed store, it’s kind of a big deal.

But how can I pass up an opportunity like this?

It may be my only chance to spend more than a few hours with Vali. And I want that more than anything. Also, how can I pass up the chance to meet Everly in person? From the moment Vali mentioned it, my mind has been whirling and I don’t predict it’s going to stop anytime soon.

Eventually, I collect myself as much as I can and get out of the car. When the wind whips my hair around my face, a faint hint of Vali’s cologne, mixed with a scent that is singularly him, invades my senses and I breathe deeply.

How crazy is it that I miss him only moments after leaving him?

Is that normal?

“Hi, honey,” my mom calls out when she hears the door open.

“Hi, Mama,” I call back, removing my coat and hanging it on the hook in the hallway. “What are you doing up so late? I hope you’re not waiting up on me.”

As I walk into the kitchen, I know exactly what she’s doing.

The sweet aroma of banana nut bread fills the space and I groan.

“Well,” she says, walking over to the oven and bending over to peek inside. “Your dad and I stayed up watching a movie, then I remembered I had some bananas that were going bad, so I sent him to bed and I came in here to bake… you know, a little me time.”

Smiling, I walk over and lean against the counter. “Smells amazing,” I tell her, wondering if this would be a good time to mention Vali’s invitation.

“So, how was the fight night?” she asks, folding a dish towel and laying it just so beside the sink. “Did you have fun?”

I nod, unable to hold back my excitement. “It was amazing and nothing like I thought it would be. The excitement in that room was electrifying.
