“That looks incredible.” Amber’s voice startles me, and I look up in the mirror to see her standing just feet behind me. “You have to buy that.” She gestures to the pale blue sundress I currently have on.
“I think it makes me look like an unripe blueberry,” I pout, having no luck finding anything I think looks good on me.
“Are you kidding me? You’re just in a funk.” She shakes her head, closing the distance between us to stand next to me.
She smoothes the front of the black tube dress she’s wearing and turns slightly to check herself out from the side.
“Buy that dress,” he finally continues, meeting my gaze in the mirror.
“You sure?” I question.
“Definitely.” She gives me a once-over, nodding her head in approval. “If you want that sexy piece of rock god to make a move, wearing that dress certainly won’t hurt.” She winks, refocusing on her reflection.
“Who said I want him to make a move?” I gawk at her.
I mean, of course, I do. I’d have to be dead not to be completely turned on by a man like Gabe. Just one look and my entire body lights on fire. And I certainly haven’t forgotten the wonders that man can work in a bedroom. But that doesn’t mean that I should pursue such a relationship with him. Things are so much more complicated than they were the last time around.
Amber gives me a look that tells me she knows better and then goes back to fawning over herself in the mirror.
“I’m absolutely getting this.” She practically squeals in delight.
I shake my head at her, paying her very little attention as my mind swirls back to Gabe. While I’ve spoken to him nearly every single day over the past week, mostly via text, our relationship, if that’s what you would call it, has not progressed past the drunk kiss I planted on him nearly two weeks ago.
He’s been super busy in the studio so he hasn’t been hanging around as much as he was in the beginning. I’ve tried to convince myself countless times that this is a good thing, but I can’t help but mourn the loss of his presence. I also can’t help but think that maybe he’s backing away from me.
Things changed the night he took me and Landen for dessert. I can’t pinpoint at what moment things shifted, but as he walked us out onto the sidewalk, planted a soft kiss on my cheek, said goodbye to Landen and then turned and walked away, I knew something was different. I could feel it in the air, in the way he looked at me.
Amber has spent the last few days trying to convince me that he’s probably just putting the ball in my court and that the next move is mine, but I automatically jump to worst case scenario. In my head, I’ve convinced myself he’s done with whatever game we were playing.
I take one last look in the mirror, letting out a slow groan as I turn and head back inside the dressing room.
