Watching Ethan walk out of the kitchen behind their father and Momma Jane, Cade shot a salacious grin in Emmaâs direction. One she did not seem to see. She had her head down, finishing the last few bites of her supper. He was fully intending to haul her down the hall to his room the second her plate was in the dishwasher. He knew the reason the other three had left them in the kitchen alone, was to give him a chance to work things out with her. More like corner her.
âCade, I really do wish youâd stop staring at me like that.â
âLike what?â he smirked.
âLike Iâm dessert.â
âBut you are dessert, Baby. My dessert.â
âPlease, donât say that. That sounds like something Jeffery Moore said,â she grumbled with distaste.
âGive me a chance, and I can make you forget anything that idiot ever said to you.â
âIâm sure you can.â She took a deep breath, shaking her head to clear the fog his words had created. âHowever, your staring is making it difficult for me to finish eating.â
âWhy is that?â he chuckled, the sound sending a shot of electricity straight to her core. Her nerve endings instantly felt like they were on fire.
Taking a deep breath, she swallowed the bite of food in her mouth before looking up at him to answer. âBecause I know what youâre wanting.â
âOh, Iâm going to get what I want.â He shot her such a heated look that time, she nearly turned into a puddle right where she sat. Realistically, she wasnât certain there wasnât going to be a wet spot on her chair when she stood up.
âGoing by the look on your face, you want the same thing,â he continued with a low growl.
âTruthfully, yes,â she swallowed, nodding her head. âBut we need to talk first.â
âAbout what?â he growled in frustration. âItâs not like we donât know each other. Youâre the only one I want. So, unless thereâs someone else for you, I donât see that thereâs anything that should stop us.â
âThereâs no one else,â she whispered, appearing quite shy all the sudden.
Rising from his chair the moment she pushed back from the table, he had her plate in his hand with his before she had a chance to pick it up. âWhy are you acting so shy now? You certainly werenât this morning.â
âI was in control of everything this morning.â
Eyeing her thoughtfully at first, he turned to put their plates in the dishwasher. âAre you wanting to be in control?â
âNot really,â she whispered, her eyes dropping to the floor. âAt least not all the time. And certainly not the first time.â
âYouâre not going to have to be,â he answered, turning back to her once the dishwasher was closed, and taking her face in his hands to look her in the eyes. âAs far as control in the future, we can discuss that later. Iâm willing to⦠take turns.â
âI know all that,â she nodded. âIâm just nervous.â
âWhy are you so nervous?â
âIâve never actually beenâ¦â Stopping, she shook her head and tried again.
