Dana recognized the number. “Hey, Auntie. How’d it go?”

“I don’t know. Not very well, I guess.”

“I told you he’s not great with women and you’ll probably have to give him lots of hints and opportunities and a couple of chances. Do you think he picked up on anything?”

“Not really. But I don’t think he likes me.”

“Oh, that’s just the way he is. Kind of grumpy-grouchy, but I think he’s just lonely and doesn’t know what to do about it.”

“Well, he is cute.”

“Do you think he looks like Elvis Presley?”

“Yeah, he does. I mean, in some of the younger pictures anyway, before Elvis put on so much weight.”

“I think Grace Havisto actually calls him Elvis. So what’s your next move? Are you going to do any decorating for him?”

“He thinks he can do it himself and he doesn’t want to spend the money.”

“Figures. Well maybe in a few weeks you can come back and actually give him concrete ideas. In the meantime I’ll sneak in some comment about budgeting for decorating. Bring up the importance of creating great first impressions in a new business.”

“I was wondering if I should try to get a job working in one of his shops. Maybe running the bakery? I did manage that little café in Green Bay for nearly ten years.”

“Hmmm. I’m surprised he said anything about the businesses. He’s really trying to keep it hush-hush. But, yeah, why not try it? Can’t hurt. And he’ll definitely need help.”

“Might as well. It doesn’t look like I’m gonna land any interior decorating projects around here.”

“You should have told him about your experience in the cafe.”

“I didn’t think of it at the time. Which was probably for the best because I got the impression he’d had enough of me. There were a few awkward moments.”

“Tell me about it. I’ve sure had my share of what you’d call really weird and awkward moments with Mr. Brent Wallace. But he is totally single so at least you don’t have any competition. I’d say leave him alone awhile, then stop in and say you were curious about his progress. Or, better yet, you could say that when he talked about all those shops, you thought about it and realized you’d be a good one to run the bakery.”

“Okay. That would give me another excuse for dropping by since he’d made it pretty clear he’s not that impressed with my interior decorating portfolio. Thanks, Dana. Who’d ever guess you’d be giving relationship advice to your Auntie Kathy?”

“Hey, no problem. As long as I don’t have to offer any guarantees of success. I’ll talk to you later. Hey, wait! You know what might work . . .”
