“Nicely done, girl,” Chloe says, her eyes going down on me. “Twirl for me, please.”

“I’m not twirling. Leave me alone,” I say, hiding my smile and blushing behind my glass of martini as the guests pass by.

The party is in full swing, a few couples dancing not far from us.

“Can we please go into the other room?” Liz asks.

She fashions a black jumpsuit, and a choker necklace, her hair fluffed up, a bright shade of lipstick on her lips.

Chloe’s gaze flicks up.

“Mmm... Martini Rosso. Red all the way, huh?” she mutters as she takes in my scarlet dress and heels, ignoring my cousin’s request.

Undeterred, Liz grabs our elbows and pushes us into the small room adjacent to the kitchen. The place is quieter than the rest of the house where the blasting music and the loud voices make the walls shudder.

Chloe sets her glass of wine on the table.

“That looks good on you,” she says her finger going up and down, pointing to my skintight red dress. “You should dress like that more often.”

“Was it your idea?” she asks Liz.

My cousin shakes her head.

I scowl.

“Why does it have to be her idea?”

Chloe’s gaze falls on my heels.

“Damn... Those look good too. What happened to you?”

“Nothing,” I say, smiling smugly, and setting my glass on a side table as well.

I lean against the window sill.

“How’s the men thing going?”

I breathe out a soft huff.

“There is no men thing.”

“Liz told me you had a few good leads.”

I shoot my cousin a pointed look.

“Why do you have to run your mouth? I just opened the account.”

Liz's lips crease into a sheepish grin.

“Chloe?”

A man cracks the door open and sticks his head inside. Chloe swings his eyes to him.

“I’ll be right there,” she says dismissively, and the man pulls away.

She turns her eyes to me and searches my face with curiosity.

“Liz said you made quite a splash on that app.”

“No, I did not. I got a bunch of messages and some pictures. Nothing earth-shattering, or relevant for that matter.”

She grins slyly.

“Define relevant,” she says.

I flick my gaze to my cousin.

“Did you tell her something?” I ask.

Chloe’s hand flicks up.

“She didn’t need to. I have eyes, and I can read the signs. Red dress, lips, and heels. Someone must’ve gotten your attention.”

I press my lips together to suppress a smile.

“Hardly. I just wanted to try something different.”

“Good thinking. What’s the occasion?”

I take a sip of my drink, hiding another smile.

“You are such a fox,” Chloe says as she deciphers my expression.

“There’s nothing, really,” I say, placing the glass back on the table.

Her eyebrows lift in disbelief.

I take a long breath.

“There was someone I found interesting.”

“When did you talk to him?”

“We didn’t. We texted each other.”

She flips her hand impatiently.

“When?”

“Last night,” I say.

“And what happened?”

“Nothing. We exchanged a few messages, and that was that.”

“Have you communicated with him since then?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was busy. Why would I contact him anyway?”

“You said he piqued your interest. The whole point is not to waste your time when you run into someone you like.
