Chapter Twelve
Instead of parking in the normal spot near the back of the building, Ahtisham parked near the front. The agent at the desk had held Officer Kyle Hall in the visitorâs area. Darren did not look forward to dealing with the man, but at least Hall hadnât brought Chandler Owen. Now Owen had a chip on his shoulder.
âDo you want to take lead on this?â Darren asked. Hall wouldnât be a fan of Talent right now, not after Petersonâs death.
âI can. Just donât leave me alone with an angry cop.â
âHeâs a parole officer, and I wasnât going to.â
âGood. I get the feeling this is going to be uglier than the interview with Harry. We arenât going to mention that Peterson might be dirty, are we? If you tell him, I think I might develop a case of diarrhea that requires a long break in a private bathroom.â
âYouâre safe,â Darren said. âThatâs the last thing we need to mention to anyone.â Darren got out of the SUV and headed for the lobby. He wondered if Kavon had told the assistant director that this case could turn into the thermonuclear bomb of interagency cooperation. Even if Peterson had blackmailed Underwood, a lot of local law enforcement would want Underwood buried under the jail. He was a con, and convicts rarely generated sympathy in others, even when they deserved it.
The longer Darren ran with this crazy theory, the more the pieces seemed to fit. Usually if his tangent was wrong, either heâd figured it out by now or Kavon had shut him down by pointing out all the ways that the idea didnât make any sense. After talking to Harry, this blackmail theory fit better. But no one on the immediate team had the computer skills, so that meant they were going to have to rely on the computer support department. Hopefully Wyatt had made time to try to check the files for hacking. Sharing tech services with other teams often meant that their cases waited. Darren did wish that someone would hire more techs. Wyatt had four different teams to try to keep up with.
âDo you want me to call Boucher?â Ahtisham asked.
If Kavon had wanted to deal with Hall, he would have come down and done it, but Darren didnât point out the obvious. âNah, we have this. Right?â
âAbsolutely,â Ahtisham said with a smile that looked about as genuine as a silver plastic Christmas tree.
Darren gestured for Ahtisham to go first, and he followed. The agent at the front directed them to one of the visitorâs rooms. Ahtisham had no more than opened the door when Officer Kyle Hall stood up from the small table. He was a short man, but he still had a physical presence about him, even though he had not aged well. His thinning hair and age spots made him look far older than the fifty-seven listed in the files. Hall ignored Ahtisham and zeroed right in on Darren.
âAgent Oberton, I was hoping that Supervisory Agent Boucher would be available.
