Chapter Seven
North
The convoy was six vehicles strong and all of them were towing heavy items. With the winding mountain roads and occasional wrecks, it made for slow going. Sean finally got on the radio and asked the question everyone had been thinking.
“Hey boss lady,” he teased, “Care to tell me why we didn’t take I25?” There was a moment of silence as everyone waited for the response.
“Just a feeling I had,” Kat replied. “I know these tight roads suck, but at least most of the wreckage went off the shoulder. Look at the bright side, we got to see Jemez Springs and Battleship Rock,” she added encouragingly. “I know it does not seem like it now, but there is a good reason we are on this route.”
“No worries, Miss Kat,” Sean immediately said. “You could drive us in fucking circles, and we would still be behind you. I was just teasing.”
“I know you were, Sean. Would it be weird to say that I think we were supposed to meet our soldier friends and have them join us?” she asked as if she, too had been thinking about it.
“Not any weirder than the other shit that has been happening,” he admitted. “I guess I better keep an eye out for our next group member,” he joked.
“Yes, we all should be watching. Whoever is sitting shotgun can use binoculars. Look for chimney smoke, other cars, anything that says someone is alive,” Kat suggested. The listeners were surprised to hear Sean’s jest turned serious. They realized their leader was right. Everyone instantly became more alert.
They decided to eat on the road, every vehicle having drinks and food available. Unless someone needed to stop to use the bathroom, the group was going to press forward. Kat would be pleased if they made it to Taos by dark. The kids were happy with their assignment, Claire said the babies were having a good day, and the adults were chatting back and forth on the radio as they moved along through the scenic mountains.
Kat let her mind drift to Sergeant Bastion and how she could have done better with that situation.
“You did fine, Kat. Don’t be upset with yourself. There is a learning curve involved with any new skill.” Apparently, Genesis was back.
“I don’t want anyone hurt because of my mistakes,” Kat said, gripping the steering wheel harder, already used to this conversation in her mind but continuing to feel guilt over what happened to Lisa.
Did you notice how you grabbed up the two soldiers by the hand and gave them a reading? That is key. Trust is a wonderful thing, but make your people earn it. Read anyone who joins the group,” the voice in her mind told her.
“I didn’t even realize I was doing it,” Kat admitted. “I just knew I had to find out if they went along with that bastard of a sergeant. Why wasn’t Bastion better when I released his karma? The doctor was. The doctor was relieved and sorry… totally different.
