AFTER GEOFF came out of surgery and recovery, the doctor allowed Sawyer and Lucie to see him for a few minutes. He was still groggy from the anesthesia and by the time they left, he had fallen asleep.

“Let’s check in to the Hilton, shower, grab a bite to eat and get a few hours of sleep while Geoff’s resting,” Sawyer said. “You can call Daisy on the taxi ride to the hotel, but when we get there, remember that you’re still Cara Bedell.”

“I remember. I’m not Lucie Evans until Cara and I change places again tomorrow.”

“I’ll leave my number at the nurse’s station and then we’ll go.”

Ten minutes later, on their way to the Hilton Barbados in Needham’s Point, a fifteen-minute drive to the airport, Lucie placed a call to Daisy on Sawyer’s phone.

“Dundee Private Security and Investigation,” Daisy answered. “How’s it going down there? Have you and Geoff—”

“Daisy, it’s me,” Lucie said.

“Oh, thank the Lord. Are you all right? Where are you? How are Geoff and Sawyer? When are you coming home?” Daisy rattled off the questions quickly, not stopping until she was out of breath.

“Slow down. I’m fine, just a little battered and bruised, but otherwise all right. Sawyer and I are in Barbados, in Bridgetown.” She hesitated, hating to tell Daisy about Geoff. “We…uh…we just left the hospital. Geoff’s going to be all right, but he was shot—”

“Shot! How did that happen? No, forget I asked. It doesn’t matter. Where was he shot? How serious is it? You tell Sawyer that I’m getting the next flight out of Atlanta. I’ll turn things here at the office over to Staci. She’ll be able to take over without any trouble.”

“Daisy, listen to me. Calm down. Geoff was shot in the shoulder and lost a lot of blood. He’s out of surgery and recovery. The doctor assured us that there’s no reason to believe he won’t be just fine.”

Lucie could hear Daisy sobbing and doing her best to do it quietly.

“Hey, it’s all right,” Lucie said. “Go ahead and cry. Then go home, pack a bag and take the first flight down here. Geoff’s at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in St. Michael Parish. Sawyer and I will be at the Hilton for a few hours and then we’ll head back to the hospital. Take a taxi when you get here. Give us a call if you need anything.”

“As soon as I brief Staci, I’ll make reservations and if I have time, I’ll go home and pack a bag. If not, I’ll just pick up whatever I need when I get there. When you talk to Geoff again, if he wakes up before I arrive, tell him…” She swallowed her tears. “You tell him he’d better not flirt with any of the nurses.”

Lucie laughed. “I’ll tell him.”

After Lucie finished her call, she handed Sawyer his phone. He looked directly at her.

“How did Daisy take the news?” he asked.

“In typical efficient Daisy fashion, if a bit more flustered than usual. She gave me a message for Geoff.
