Chapter Fourteen

THE ONLY OPEN TABLE was one close to the dice game, but Jude made it easy to ignore the commotion. “What are you hungry for, pretty lady?”

“What would you recommend?” Hollie replied, unfamiliar with the menu or even what a realm full of witches and warlocks would eat.

“You can’t go wrong with French fries.”

“They have French fries on Samothrace?” she asked, surprised.

He chuckled. “French fries are multiversal. That’s to say, they have a version of it on every world that’s civilized enough to heat up oil to scalding temperature and toss a potato, or a reasonable facsimile, into it.”

“French fries sound perfect.” Hollie could feel herself starting to relax, grateful to be able to push away thoughts of the vampire if only for a few moments. She watched as Jude summoned a waitress, who appeared carrying four trays, one in each of her four hands.

“What can I getcha?” she asked, and Hollie noticed that her skin had a slight bluish tinge. The elaborate golden bangles around her neck contained little ivory beads in the shape of miniature human skulls.

“French fries, please,” Jude announced. “And...kerchup. Am I saying that right?” he asked Hollie.

“Ketchup,” she corrected with a grin.

“No idea what kelchub is, but we don’t have any,” the waitress said in a bored tone.

“Just the fries is fine,” Hollie told her, and the waitress set off to retrieve their order. Turning back to Jude, she took advantage of the opportunity to study him. There was a jovial quality to him, a mischievousness that reminded her of the class clown at her high school. But that guy was nowhere near as handsome as the warlock is.

He grinned at her, his eyes like liquid gold. “Why did you come back unexpectedly?” he asked, maintaining eye contact.

“It’s sort of a long story.” An excuse seemed better than explaining her travail. Let’s keep things light, since they’re bound to be temporary.

“And I’m a short attention span sort of guy?” he asked, as if he’d somehow landed on her wavelength. He shrugged. “Some guys want to get serious so fast, it can be a bit off-putting, you know what I mean?”

She did. The image of the vampire was in her mind before he finished his sentence. “You don’t have to worry about all that with me,” he assured her. “I can never stay put for very long, certainly not long enough for a long-term commitment. ‘Eternity’ isn’t in my vocabulary.”

His words surprised her, and not just because they hit home. We seem strangely in sync, she thought, remembering their conversation in the shop and how he’d seemed to know things about her already. Maybe he’s using magic on me, she thought, remembering Cass’s little dust trick. From one manipulator to another. I need to re-evaluate my taste in men.

Their fries arrived, and not a moment too soon. Hollie was feeling suddenly ravenous, and she dug into the golden fried potatoes with relish. “I like a woman who enjoys her food,” Jude said idly. “It usually means they’re passionate about other things as well.
