Sam stared at Rakun, horror sinking its icy claws into his spine. Rakun met his eyes with his own burning gaze and let out a rasping rusty-hinge laugh.

“So you see now, young Samuel? Power I have, beyond anything you could ever hope to attain.”

“How?” Sam asked. It was the only word he could get out past his suddenly dry lips.

“Through death and resurrection and fire and earth,” Rakun said. “Power it was that slew me. Power that raised me. Power that found me. And now it is power that I wield.”

“To what end,” this came from the lich, and Sam had never heard Araxes sound more cautious.

“Your deaths, for a start. After that, I plan to ensure I am never powerless again.”

“Rakun,” Char’s voice came from beside Sam on his left. “Rakun, I am sorry for what was done to you, but there are children here. Please, do not do this.”

“And why should I not?” Rakun asked, looking at Char. “Have we not all found the truth of the world in the past weeks? The strong take what they wish from the weak. I am strong now, and your deaths will make me stronger still. And so shall I continue. I will destroy the lich that gave me life, I will break his kingdom and scatter its population to the winds. I shall take back, in blood, in land, in life, a thousandfold what was taken from me.”

“You can’t kill us,” Pearl piped up, indignant. “You said you’d give us a chance to surrender!”

Rakun grinned. “And so I shall. Surrender to me, and I shall make your deaths quick and painless.”

“Oh I hate it when the bad guys do that,” Pearl muttered.

Sam took a deep breath and wished like hell he had five or six of the Heavy Boys at his back right now.

“Not gonna happen, Rakun,” he said quietly.

Rakun nodded.

“Then die.”

And he lunged.
