Cassidy stalked into the kitchen where Eric was putting dishes in the dishwasher. Dragging out the kitchen chair, she sank onto it.
âSo whatâs new with you?â Eric leaned against the counter.
âHah, funny guy.â Heâd coaxed a smile out of her, which she didnât think was possible.
âWhereâs the perp?â
He was a laugh riot. âSheâs in the bathroom. You know the saying, âwhat goes around comes aroundâ? Youâd do well to remember that while youâre having fun at my expense.â
Eric pushed away from the counter and joined her at the table. âSheâs a kid. Was it a stupid thing to do? You bet. Sounds normal for a teenager to me.â
âI suppose, but itâs not like either of her parents are here to deal with it. I donât know whether to let Vicky handle it or try to get through to Teri.â She shook her head. âIâm the last person who should have her. When we were growing up, I was more likely to be the âperpâ than Teri.â
âI figured. You might think you hide your inner wild child, but I could tell.â
âYou could not.â
âI plan to hang around long enough to find out, but thatâs beside the point.â Eric covered her hand with his. âYou might be the perfect person to take care of her while Teri and Nick are gone.â
âOh, noââ
âHear me out. This is only if Jessieâs parents decide the current arrangement isnât working out.â
âWhat about us?â Cassidy felt her face flame crimson at the unfortunate word choice. Thankfully, Eric didnât even blink. âI mean, the business?â
âNo sense in worrying about it yet. Iâm trying to get you to think about the possibilities.â
âTeri and Nick would never agree. Especially after the stunt Jessieâs pulled. Vicky and Doug are established, and Jessie will have the benefit of two parent figures.â
âShe doesnât live with two parents now. If you took care of her, you both could get to know each other better.â
Cassidy crossed her arms and leaned back against the chair. âEric, why are you so intent about this?â
âI donât know.â He shrugged. âMaybe because sheâs about the same age as Micah was when Mom and Dad died. I donât want you to miss the opportunity to help raise herâand do a better job than I didâeven if itâs only for a couple of months.â
She thought for a few moments. âItâs not up to me, but I promise Iâll keep an open mind. Thatâs the best I can do.â
He smiled and the warmth went all the way to her toes. Keeping her distance got harder every time she was with him. Unfortunately.
âAunt Cassidy?â
âIâm going to get out of here.â Eric looked at the doorway where Jessie had stopped. He leaned down and whispered, âYouâll do the right thing. Iâd bet money on it.â He straightened, âNice to meet you, Jessie,â and shut the door as he left.
Cassidy rose from the table. âCome in, Jess.â She pulled out a chair and her niece sank down. âWhat did your aunt say after I left?â
