Chapter Ten

“Hello,” said a white-haired man with a Londoner accent. Around him, the corridor of space vanished and was replaced by a desert expanse soaked in the deep blue light just before sunrise. A village a short distance away slept with the half-constructed pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx beyond it.

“You always did like that fifties ‘Greatest Retro’ look,” Ernestine remarked, smiling at his tan trousers and cardigan worn over a white dress shirt. His company’s logo, a red door with a round, green window, stood behind him.

“You probably know that I’m Ed Blunt. I know you’ve come a long way to find me, but don’t stop now, you’re almost there.”

“My Ed,” Ernestine said, taking in the elderly man and recommitting his face to memory.

“Now, if you’re one of my ex-wives, you shouldn’t have bothered.”

Ernestine frowned and crossed her arms.

“Unless it’s you, Ern,” he said, at which point a smile slowly started to spread across her face. “I’d be glad to see you again. My biggest regret was not being there for you when you needed me. All I could see was my work and I should’ve seen you.”

“Ed,” Ernestine said, shaking her head, slowly.

“And now onto the boring part. Where am I? You’ve gathered so far that I must be in a game and you’re right. The question you must have is: Which one?” he asked with an enigmatic smile. “Look for me in Sword & Sorcery. It’s my favorite RPG and the one place I wanted to spend my extended retirement.”

Ernestine’s eyes widened at the statement. “You never told me that!”

“Well, now you know where to find me and you’ve passed all of my tests to get here. Good luck.”

The recording vanished, as did the view. Ernestine was now looking at a gazebo where her friends were enjoying high tea. She looked down at her garments and gasped. “Oh God! Victorian dress!”

“Ern!” Zahra exclaimed, jumping up from her chair. “What happened?”

Ernestine raised her dress high enough to see her footwear. “Anything but high heels!”

“Amen,” Zahra said with a laugh.

All three of her friends gathered around her. Ernestine lowered her layered dress and smiled a wistful smile. “It was Ed. Well, it was a recording of him. I got his location.”

“And?” Garrett asked, looking over his sunglasses at her.

“He’s in a game called Sword & Sorcery,” Ernestine replied.

Mason’s ears perked up. “Seriously?”

“What?”

“That’s my favorite game! I was just there a couple of days ago,” Mason replied before a small smile appeared on his face. “I can’t believe that was just a few days ago. It feels like months.”

“Well, it turns out it was Ed’s favorite game, too,” Ernestine said.

“I should’ve known,” Mason said. “It’s one of the oldest games on the vU.”

“How big is Sword & Sorcery?” Garrett asked.

“About the size of the UK, why?”

“I was worried you’d say something like that,” Garrett replied, beginning a slow walk towards the dome’s edge.

“Why is that a problem?” Zahra asked, falling into step next to him.

“How are we gonna find him?” Garrett asked.
