Chapter III

Vera arrived at work a half hour earlier than usual. She headed out after the second episode of Mystery Pop Pop, she didn’t bother to wait for the alarm. She tried to change her sheets but the damp made everything a clingy mess. Besides, her mattress was soaked, she had rather let it dry first. She opened her window a little wider to let in the sunlight and heat and hoped her mattress would be dry by the time she got home. Vera moved at her own pace to shower, dress and leave, she had nothing but time. The free bus pulled up as soon as she stepped onto the stop and the ride was a quiet trip under the hazy morning sun.

With the yellow and brown bus rumbling into the distance, Vera walked across the lot the stubby row of stores shared. Four in total, YinYue shared the middle with the auto parts store Tires, Shocks and More. They were locked up like a fortress; locks all over the steel grate covering the doors and windows, security stickers slapped about haphazardly. On the other side of YinYue was Royal Pizzeria, which had been around forever. A faded and sun-bleached paper taped to the grand window with crackled, yellow tape displayed the hours. One could see the columns of stacked pizza boxes against the wall and over the soda coolers. On the other side of the auto store was Happy Words, a stationary store bedecked with Korean advertisements and cute QR clings for deals and coupons. Derrick always got free markers and paint pens from there, and in exchange, he would sell them instruments and practice time with deep discounts. Oily cross patch gates covered the door and picture window.

Vera strolled around the corner behind Happy Words as she scrolled through her phone. Nothing interesting on Twip or any of her favorite sites. Memories of last night drifted back. Residual pain waved through her body as she tried to will it away with more mindless scrolling. She regretted watching Mass Graves.

In a minute’s pace, she was at YinYue’s loading dock. Long morning shadows crossed over the empty back lot. Vera hoisted herself onto the dock’s ledge with a couple tries. She walked to the double doors and fished out her keys. She sorted through them until she found a gunmetal purple key and entered it in the weather-beaten lock. It was stubborn but with a few stern tries, the key turned and she walked open the heavy door outwards. She could hardly open the doors normally, she always walked them open. She waltzed in past the slow sweeping door and heard it bang shut behind her. The lights above her turned on, sensed by the motion detector near the doors. A shrill beep sounded: the alarm system. Vera went to the alarm panel tucked between the door and the dingy motion sensor and tapped in her code on the bright, lime lit keys. The panel accepted with a cold beep.
