Chapter Nineteen

“Guy. Wade. What are you doing here?”

“Adam, more importantly, what were you doing in the Underworld?” the angel asked. “In fact, how did you even know that place existed? That’s no place for you!”

He took the manhole cover from my hands and slammed it into place. Then in an instant, he had a champagne bottle in his hand, while Wade suddenly held a tray with three empty glasses.

“I can always rely on you for a festive mood, Guy.”

“You shouldn’t have been down there,” Wade scolded through gritted teeth.

“It looks like you’ve had time to get to know each other,” I said.

“And we both share a concern for you,” Guy admitted.

“A common cause can start a conversation,” said Wade. “Besides, what else is someone new to the Afterlife supposed to do?”

“Was I the only topic of conversation?”

Guy nodded, then poured our drinks.

“Pity.” My glass was about to wet my lips. “Hey, hold on a second. Wade, you’re talking to me. What’s changed?”

He looked to my guardian and then back to me.

“I’ve been sorting Wade out since you disappeared. And now that you’re back where you should be, I have to sort you out as well.”

“Guy, I’m sorry I went off at you.”

“Adam, I’m an angel dealing with people’s issues all day. I have a few battle scars already. Your outburst was an annoying insect bite compared to what else I’ve been put through.”

Wade moved to my guardian’s side.

“And did you really think you’d find answers in the Underworld? Besides, look what they dressed you in. Gray pajamas! It’s hardly the height of fashion.” He snapped his fingers. A smart jacket, a scarf, and jeans that were a bit young for me adorned my body. “That’s better. Traveling clothes.”

“Where are we going?”

“On a secret adventure, apparently,” Wade replied.

“What?”

“That’s all he told me.”

“Yes, my guardian angel likes to talk in riddles.”

“Now listen,” Guy said, “This is the first of three locations I need to take you to.”

As he spoke, the entrance to the Underworld was replaced by something entirely unexpected. My own funeral.

“Who are those men?” I inquired. “The ones grouped in the middle?” I pointed. “The ones with that toy rabbit dressed in black.”

Wade grunted, then asked, “You don’t remember?”

“Are you sure you don’t remember, Adam?” Guy probed. “Do any of those faces look familiar?”

“This would be a lot easier if you gave me my memory back,” I replied.

“I’m already skating on thin ice. I can’t make the same mistake twice.” He gulped half of his champagne.

“Do you want me to remember, Wade?”

“I want to feel better about our relationship. I don’t care how we get there.”

Everything faded before a scene in a cemetery took its place. There was a younger version of my husband chatting to our good friend, Maude. They stood apart from the others who were watching my casket slowly lower into my final resting place.

“Oh, this conversation.” Wade trailed off on the last word.

I felt tense, so I knocked back my whole glass of bubbly.
