Chapter 14

Nix and Raziela shared a solemn silence. Raziela’s head was down, her claws scratching at the stone, her cheeks still wet with tears. Nix swallowed as he looked down at her, his ambivalence weighing on him. He was grateful when Spas and Vaughn walked back into the cave.

“So,” Vaughn asked Nix, “what reptile mojo is she trying to work now?”

“None, currently,” Nix said. A brief silence. “Vaughn, I need you to watch her.”

Vaughn halted. “Bweh?”

“Yes, you.”

“Uh,” Vaughn said as he scratched his head, “you do realize that I’m not as equipped to deal with her as you are, right?”

Nix wasn’t moved. “Hex her if she gets out of hand.”

“Ah,” Vaughn said. “About that . . .”

“You used it? Fine. Shoot her if she tries to escape. I’ll be outside with Spas.”

Vaughn’s lips thinned. “Okay then,” he said, squeezing his Hexebuss tighter. “Can I shoot to kill?”

“Yes.”

Raziela winced. Spas and Vaughn exchanged an uneasy glance. “Uh, wow,” Vaughn said. “Not to sound pious or anything, but that’s an abrupt change of heart.”

“Well,” Nix admitted, “things just got a lot more complicated.”

“Not really,” Vaughn said. “So long as I can shoot her.”

Spas worked his jaw. “Yeah, Nix? About that talk?”

“You can have your say later,” Nix said as he walked out of the cave. Raziela got to her feet, her head lowering at Vaughn.

Vaughn waved his finger at her and raised his Hexebuss. “Ah, ah, ah! I will blast the crazy right out of you!” Raziela’s muscles tensed, as if she were building herself up into a storm of talons and teeth. He aimed the Hexebuss at her head.

“Dragoness!” Nix roared from outside. Raziela cowered.

Vaughn nodded triumphantly at Raziela. “That’s right. You’d better listen to giant fire-doom lizard.” Despite Raziela’s fear, she made a mental note to put Vaughn’s guts through a loom as soon as she had the chance.

Outside, Nix sat himself at the edge of the platform, gazed down at the waters with a deep-set grimace. Spas walked hesitantly toward him before siding himself next to him. “Yeah,” Spas said, unenthused. “That water. Let me tell ya: not as placid as you think.”

“Spas.”

“Ever spit on a crocodile’s head? They don’t even move.”

“Spas.”

The young dragon stopped his dialog, his shoulders slouching. “Why do I not want to know what you’re about to tell me?”

Another pause. “Simple, really,” Nix said. “I never thought you’d need to know.”

Spas knew where this was going. “It’s her ‘daddy’, isn’t it?” Nix closed his eyes and nodded. Spas asked, “You two have a history?”

Nix swallowed. “Yeah.”

Spas frowned wryly. “Long story?”

Despondently, Nix shrugged. “The necessary details? No. Doesn’t make the situation any less grave.”

“Grave?”

Nix tilted his head up and exhaled. “It could be. Nothing definitive for now, but you still need to know what’s going on.”

“Alright then,” Spas said anxiously. “Let’s hear it.”

Nix gazed down at the water. “Her father’s name is Malak. We have a bit of a past.”
