CHAPTER 8

I was too limp to move. Even the sticky wet spot beneath me didn’t provide enough incentive to rouse myself. Beside me, Rick stirred from the bed. I closed my eyes and listened to his soft footsteps. Water ran briefly in the bathroom, stopped, then once more. The mattress dipped as he lay down again. His warm hand came to rest between my shoulder blades. His voice was soft and low near my ear.

“Ian? Are you awake?”

I managed to groan.

“Are you okay?”

I wiped the drool off my mouth and turned my head to look at him. His face was shadowed, but the worry showed. I smiled for him.

“I’m fine. Be a champ and start the shower for me?”

Instead of getting up, he moved closer. I rolled onto my side and rested my knee on his hip. “You don’t want come too close.

The sheet’s wet.”

There was humor in his low, rich voice. “I can well imagine.

You always make a sound like that when you come?”

My energy level was returning. I snorted. “Hell, no. Now go start the shower. After we rinse off, we can have another drink and talk strategy.”

Rick sighed. His big hand cupped my check. “Can we let go of business for tonight?”

I didn't know if that was a good idea. Not discussing business would probably lead to talking about more personal matters. I wasn’t good at that and did my utmost to avoid telling my tricks too much. But Rick was more than recreational sex. He was business, too.

“Rick, we have a problem. There are a few things I need to tell you.”

“That sounds ominous. I’ll get the hot water running. Are you sure you’re all right?”

I felt a little twinge around my heart. My sense of him was that he was a loving, caring partner, but he wasn’t my partner. Maybe I could get him to open up about why he wasn’t ready to take the ring off his finger.

“I’m fine. I haven’t bottomed in a long time, so yeah, I’m feeling it a bit, but you didn’t hurt me.”

I thought he looked relieved, but couldn’t be sure in the dim light. He leaned in and kissed me, slanting his lips across mine without demand. I answered the kiss for a moment, then pulled back. He hesitated, like he’d expected more, before he rolled off 58

the bed and went into the bathroom. I didn’t move until I heard the shower come on.

I groaned as I got to my feet, relishing the pull of muscles and the slight soreness that would be gone by morning. The man certainly knew his business. I’d been well and truly fucked and it had been splendid. I’d treasure the memory because it might be several more years before I found another man I’d let up my ass.

Rick stepped into the shower and moved aside so I could stand under the spray. I lifted my face to the water and wet my hair, then turned and let the hot water beat my shoulders as the steam rose around us.
