Chapter Four

THE DAY WAS GLORIOUSLY sunny and hotter than usual for July in Seattle, making it a perfect day for sailing. They returned to the Gemini with a full hamper and other necessities for a day on the water. Evan and Dean had them out of the marina and into Elliott Bay in no time. The gentle swaying of the boat didn’t bother her as they moved north toward the San Juan Islands.

A crisp breeze made her appreciate the long-sleeve wrap she wore over her bikini, and she gratefully accepted the cup of coffee Dean held out to her about twenty minutes into their sail.

“It’ll warm up a bit as it gets later. When we drop anchor for a while, that will reduce the wind.” His gaze dipped to the modest bit of cleavage her cover-up revealed. “We’ll have you out of that thing sometime today.”

She rolled her eyes and waved him back to the controls with his brother, content to stand at the side, leaning on the rail of the seat that doubled as the bathing deck—not that they would need that today. It was much too cold for the average swimmer to jump into the Strait of Juan de Fuca without a wetsuit.

The sun was bright, making her feel more cheerful than she had for days. It had been nice to retreat to their apartment and hide away for a little while, but she was ready to get back into the sunshine and on with her life.

Within two hours, they had reached the islands, and the twins chose to drop anchor off the shore of one of the uninhabited islands. Tamsyn made herself useful by helping Evan spread the tablecloth on the deck so Dean could unload the hamper. She sat down between them, watching the growing spread of food with a growling stomach. The bagel and cream cheese she’d had earlier had left no lasting impression, especially when faced with the mound of delicacies.

The wind had lessened dramatically with the yacht stopping, and she watched with appreciation as the men stripped off their T-shirts, leaving them both wearing lightweight cargo pants. Feeling the need to tease in turn, she unbuttoned her cover-up and draped it on the pile with their shirts, leaving her in a white bikini top and purple checked gingham capris over her bikini shorts.

“Heaven,” said Dean, his gaze glued to the generous swell of cleavage spilling from her bikini top.

“It is a perfect day,” she agreed with a demure smile.

“Perfect,” echoed Evan as he offered her a blini topped with caviar and a dollop of sour cream.

Slowly, she took the treat into her mouth, licking the tips of his fingers seductively. “Delicious,” she said with her mouth full, pushing aside the twinge of guilt at the bad manners. How she wished she could banish Diane’s voice of motherly guilt to a faraway place and never hear it again.

“We know how you feel about forks—” Dean offered her a strawberry with his fingers.

“So we left them behind,” finished Evan as he popped the cork on a bottle of champagne.
