CHAPTER 14
Saturday morning, Mitch and Derrick met to play their weekly game of one-on-one.
“What’s with you?” Mitch asked after easily driving past Derrick for a lay-up to end the game. He was pretty sure he already knew the answer, Rebecca Miller.
Derrick grabbed the ball as it came through the net and asked, “What do you think of that guy Rebecca’s dating?”
Mitch shrugged and started walking toward the bleachers to grab his water bottle. Derrick walked with him. “I don’t know anything about him, but I’m sure that if Rebecca likes him, then he must be a pretty good guy.”
“There’s something about him that I don’t trust,” Derrick commented.
“Are you sure you’re not letting your own feelings for her cloud your judgment?” Mitch asked.
Derrick paused before answering. Then he sighed and answered simply, “No.”
Mitch smiled. “So, you’re finally ready to admit you like her, huh?”
Derrick frowned. “Yeah, I like her. I just don’t know what to do about it,” he grudgingly admitted.
“You could try telling her how you feel,” Mitch suggested.
Derrick shook his head. “No, I can’t do that while she’s seeing someone else. It wouldn’t be right. I’m not going to step in on another man’s territory.”
Mitch knew there was no use arguing with him. Derrick lived by a very strict ethical code. It was one of the things Mitch admired most about him. Unless Derrick had proof that the guy was going to hurt Rebecca, he wouldn’t try to steal her from him.
Mitch reached out and clasped Derrick on the shoulder. “I guess you’re just going to have to wait and see if your instincts about the man are right. In the meantime, it won’t hurt to be her friend. How about staying to watch her game with me?”
Derrick nodded in agreement. They grabbed their gear and headed to the locker room.
A few minutes later, they returned to the gym. Derrick spotted Rebecca on the far side. She was shooting three-pointers. He stopped to watch her for a moment, admiring the fluidity of her movements.
“We’ve been spotted,” Mitch said, lifting his arm to wave at Rebecca’s friend Marilyn.
Derrick saw Marilyn say something to Rebecca. She stopped and turned to look their way. He lifted his arm in salute and started jogging across the floor toward her.

Rebecca felt her heartbeat quicken just like it did every time she laid eyes on Derrick Peterson. Man, he’s gorgeous, she thought. Within a few moments, Mitch and Derrick had reached her.
“Hi, girls,” Mitch greeted the team who was warming up behind her. “Good luck today. Who are you playing?”
“It’s a re-match with the Shockers,” Emma answered.
“Isn’t that the only game you’ve lost this season?” Mitch asked.
“Yep,” Emma replied. “They’re a really tough team.”
“We’ll be sure to do our part cheering you on from the bench,” Mitch said, giving the girls his most dazzling smile.
They blushed and giggled, then returned to their warm-ups.
“I’m glad you’re here,” Rebecca said. “It means a lot to me and the girls.”
Derrick met her eyes and smiled warmly. “Every team needs a good cheering section,” he said.
