‘Whatever else may happen, I’m glad I’m not either of those two,’ Dam said to Jessen, closing the door to Strategy One. They’d left Narkompros and Terma inside to agonise over which straw to grasp at next to keep the Project on‐line.

Jessen agreed. ‘Hardened party liners like them… They’ll be crucified by the Government if all this screws up.’ Dam was sure he’d caught a twinkle in her eye. ‘I feel happier knowing Yve was supposed to be in the hangar, anyway.’

‘Suppose so.’ Dam shrugged. ‘Doesn’t explain what she was doing on board the wrong ship, though. Particularly a decommissioned one.’ He sighed. ‘We’ll just have to hope she regains consciousness soon.’

‘In the meantime, do you want me to talk to Makkersvil?’

Dam looked at her. ‘If that’s all right with you.’

Jessen nodded. ‘I reckon he’s the one person in this Facility who would swap places with Yve gladly.’
