Chapter Ten

The silence across the mobile connection was ominous. Kellan’s heart pounded as he waited for Rory to reply to his announcement that he was having doubts about the restaurant opening. He gripped the balcony railing with his free hand and stared at the harbor, grasping for any sense of peace from the water.

He’d certainly had peace last night on the boat with Sam. Seeing all kinds of stars, orgasmic and otherwise. Sam knew exactly what to do with his tongue on another man’s body.

A seagull landed on the nearest boardwalk lamppost, nearly at eye level with him, staring at him pointedly, as if to say Peace from the water? Look at you.

Something that Aoife would say, were she here. The expression on the face of the seagull was kind of like her, too. She’d promised she’d find a way to keep in touch after death. Inhabiting a bird that loved stealing French fries and crapping on cars seemed her style.

He laughed.

“You find this funny?” Rory snapped.

Good Christ, he’d drifted away from the conversation, which deserved his full concentration.

“Ror, I’m so sorry. I got to thinking about Aoife, and there was a seagull, and—”

His friend hummed sympathetically. “At least your memories of her have you smiling.”

“Sure.” He swallowed. “I didn’t call to chat about my grief, though.”

“Something tells me it’s intrinsically tied to you announcing that you’re doubting our business plan. The one we’ve been busting our arses on for literal years.”

Oof. A rough truth, he knew. “It might be.”

“Having someone die, love, someone young... It’s bound to get you asking questions. But it doesn’t mean you need to throw away what mattered before their death. Aoife loved seeing you on the line, or heading out in your whites to accept all that praise. And she’d get a thrill knowing that her money was a big part of getting a bunch of English folks to love something—to crave something—unapologetically Irish. Proving we can be upscale, too.”

He didn’t doubt Rory was right. Sort of. “Aoife would have adored that if she knew it was what had my heart on fire. And I just don’t know it is.”

“Well, figure it out, wouldja? Your bloody self-discovery’s been enough of a hit, having you gone for months. And now this...”

“I couldn’t get the money without being gone.”

“And now you’re not sure you want to use it for our plan anyway.”

“Rory...”

“We might not share blood,” he said, “but we’re still family. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the only quality family you have left.”

“And that wouldn’t change. But I need more than just you, Steven and the kids.” One of the reasons they’d decided to stay in London instead of opening a place in Dublin or Cork was Rory’s English husband. Rory had wanted their kids to be close to Steven’s parents.

“You’ll bounce back, darling. Really. We’ll build our empire, and you’ll get the chance to find someone special now that you won’t be at the hospital every night.”

“I’m starting to wonder if I could find someone special here.
