CHAPTER SEVEN
BENEDICT wasnât at all sure how it had happenedâbut it had. As much as he wanted to fight it, Darla was an amazing woman who was somehow becoming important to him. Was it because of her caring and giving nature, her desire to help other women and their children, or was it simply because sheâd taken the chance and trusted him?
Could he, in turn, now let himself trust her? She was so different from Carolina. Darla was the genuine article, not someone who lived a life of lies and deception. Darla didnât seek a crown for the work she undertook, she simply wanted to help, to make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate, and that positive, almost obsessive desire had sprung from a place of pain, a place of tragedy, a place of personal knowledge.
She was quite a woman and the more he learned about her, the more he seemed to be unable to control this strange need to protect her. To ensure she didnât burn out, that her fuse wasnât extinguished in the dark and dangerous world she walked through every night, and as he focused on the way the sweetness from her lips was fuelling the raging fire deep within him, he found it even more difficult to keep the kiss light and testing rather than fierce and unresisting. Ever since theyâd met, heâd wanted to know what it would be like to kiss Darla and now he was finding out just how mind-numbingly incredible it was.
As he kissed her plump mouth, Ben felt the hint of a deep-seated longing that had been denied for far too long. He wanted to slide his arms around her, to have her as close to him as possible whilst plundering the depths of her delicious mouth, but he sensed that taking things slowly was the only way to go.
This woman was special and as such she deserved to be cherished, to feel secure in the new emotions they were presently exploring. He had no real idea what sheâd been through but even with the small part of her past sheâd shared, he could well imagine how much pain sheâd suffered at the hands of others.
This uncontrollable need to hold her, to gather her close, to protect her surged through him again but once more he forced himself to tread lightly, to focus on the smallest sensations and to dwell in them. He eased back and pressed a few butterfly kisses to her cheeks. The softness of her perfect skin blending with the saltiness of her tears made for a heady combination of desire mixed with determination.
* * *
There was no sound outside, no cars, no birds, no kids playing in the street. No clocks ticking inside or anything else to disturb this perfect moment. Nothing seemed to exist but the two of them and Darla wanted it to continue for ever, to lose herself in this one moment where nothing bad could ever touch her.
She closed her eyes and lifted her chin to allow him greater access to her.
