“You sound pretty good.”

“Thank you?” I said as I put the phone down on the bathroom counter. After texting Izzy back and forth last night to confirm that I was okay, I decided to call her the next evening to chat while I took my hair out of its braid.

“I mean for someone that has been sick.”

“I guess that’s true. I’m feeling pretty much back to normal.” I’d almost fucked up. I wanted to tell her the truth, but I didn’t know what kind of danger I was putting her in if I did tell her what had actually happened to me. Then again, Nash had no problem telling Bianca and Easton what had happened so what was stopping me? Was this something you told someone over the phone?

“And I’m glad you were able to have Nash there to help. What was that like? I’d expected that he would be the last person who would want to help you.”

Tell me something I don’t know, please.

“Yeah, I can’t complain, though. He knew I was in bad shape when he found me, and once I was stable, he whisked me away to help me.”

“Did you play find the stethoscope?”

I did a double take and stared at my phone. “Excuse me? Did you just refer to sex as that?”

“Maybe.”

“We need to talk about your euphemisms.”

“Regardless of that, don’t try to change the subject!”

“Why would I be having sex when I was sick? That’s exerting a lot of energy. And weren’t you ready to beat up Nash when we were at that frat party?”

“That was before he decided to drop everything to take care of you. He clearly still cares about you. And you’re clearly feeling better now and you’re single, he’s single, and it’s not like you haven’t fucked before so...”

I ran a hand over my face, immensely regretting when I told Izzy that I’d lost my virginity to Nash and that he’d come over to give me a “proper goodbye” without knowing that was what he was doing. Although she didn’t know the real reason I was here, her sentiment was still true. He had done everything to be here with me, including murdering someone. Setting aside the fact that he looked like he actually enjoyed it, he didn’t have to kill my would-be kidnapper on my behalf.

I cleared my throat and said, “That’s not what is going on over here.”

“Well maybe it should. It doesn’t hurt to get laid every once in a while.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m going to hang up, Izzy. I’ll see you soon.”

“Stay as long as you want if it means you’re—”

I hung up the phone, cutting her off mid-sentence.

I ran my fingers through my hair, loving the waves that had been created as a result of taking my braid out. After one final look in the mirror, I grabbed my phone and turned off the lights.

With the conversation that I’d had with Izzy at the front of my mind, I walked through the bedroom and into the living room and found Nash in his usual spot in the cabin: sitting on the couch.
